Pattern Failboat February

more likely that was a once lifetime event
Yeah. I am happy to say I have witnessed the best snowstorms that NC weather has to offer.
Feb 1969, March 1980, Jan 1988, March 1993, and Feb 2004....... Feb 2014 and March 2009 get an honorable mention. It's time for a repeat of at least one of those. If I had my choice, it would be Jan 1988. The best snowstorm I have ever witnessed.

Me to brother. Yes it is. They were great! That's what gets me through every winter is hoping for another one of those. Anyone of them.

We missed the front end of this and got a ton of rain but still got around 3 inches of snow out of the back end. If this happened in January and tracked 50-75 farther southeast, we would have been measuring snow by the feet here.
Actually if you remember the storm bombed out about 12 hours earlier that forecast. That’s places like Birmingham and Huntsville ended up with so much more than what they were originally forecast. I think totals would have been higher for the Piedmont and eastern upstate had the storm bombed out later.

EPS drops a couple troughs through the eastern US at the end of next week and early part of the week after that.

I wasn’t even a Zygote until another 20 months after this …. BUT, this one my dad used to talk about all the time. Talked about Going to work in it in Kannapolis at Cannon Mills (There’s a throwback for the older Carolina Crowd). He woulda been 30 at the Time as he was Born in 58’

That's possible. Those 12 hours could have changed the track and perhaps brought more cold air down. We needed more cold air out in front of the storm too though. If I remember right, my area got into the 50's the day before the storm moved in. CAD turned many places over to sleet and snow after midnight, but I was too far southeast for that. I had to wait until around 10am Sat morning for snow.

I can only imagine how things would go today with the internet, these weather boards, and live streaming from every storm chaser out there. I can imagine this board going crazy if we got a repeat. If we do, I'd like more cold air out in front and a track along of just off the coast.

A repeat of Jan 1988 is what we need because it would get 95% of the board in on it. March 1993 would leave out a large part of NC and SC if it took the same track.

We got 9.5-10 inches that storm.
I'm pretty sure we had a blizzard warning that day.
It was the coldest few days after that snow I remember in Mid March.
I remember 1980,1983 & 2009 also.
1983 was unbelievable broke limbs with leaves and small fruit on our fruit trees the snow was so heavy and wet.
I think that was 8 or 9 inches.

Btw Jan 88 will always be my fav,
Snowing heavily in the upper teens settling in to 12° for a good portion of that storm.
We'll never forget it!

Never got above freezing today, was 30.7 at my house and 32 at the airport. Impressive for this late into the season.
The last two times we have a subfreezing high this late in the season was in 2015 (also on Feb 20th) and in 2010 (Feb 16th) - and both of those years had more snow to come. I don't think we're done just yet, but at the same time I am ready for warmup. That wind is brutal lol.

Best storms I remember in Charlotte were 1988, a foot in our backyard as a kid. Early 2000s in far eastern Matthews (Charlotte suburb) we had a 17 inch total and then a 12+ inch total a couple years later.
Then I believe in 2014 CLT had measurable snow 3 days in a row which added up to about 8 inches in our yard in Matthews.
And it's been so long now since CLT has had what I consider a "decent snow", i.e., enough to cover up the grass blades completely. I think we've had exactly 1 such snow in at least the last 8+ winters, I believe in 2018.
We are overdue big time.

Those you mentioned were nice, but Feb 1973 for me.

March 25th 1971 had thunder snow in NE ga
Oh yes, March 25th 1971 was great here in Greenwood also. I remember it started around 11:15 that morning in English class. My teacher told us to settle down it's not going to last but 15 minutes. An hour and a half later we were dismissed from school in a winter wonderland. Snowed until way after dark, biggest flakes I have ever seen. Hey if we're not going to get any, it's nice to reminisce.

What a winter day this will be. 11 degrees with constant NW flow flurries…
I think this band was over us all night, too bad it’s too light for good accumulation.

I'm watching the 8-11 day period for a possible event and then just beyond that for a potentially bigger event somewhere along the east coast. Active pattern with cold air returning. There looks like there may be enough amplitude in the pattern to allow at least a traditional phasing situation...maybe more.

Showing the AI, which goes on to phase, but it's OTS.

Spring is coming, but probably not till after mid month. MJO just hibernating on the cold side for a change. Models have been too aggressive trying to kill it, so we'll see.

00z EPS has at least two more (maybe another) shots of cold air in the extended

That is a nice pattern and it looks like it gives us at least two more shots for some possible wintery precipitation before moving into a more zonal pattern mid month. The blocking which has made a big difference compared to the two previous winters stays in place. If the high pressure systems providing the cold air feed can get into a favorable position and have enough strength there is a chance winter might not be over for us.

Would love to get another shot at snow,
Esp something that was over 3 inches but even if that doesn't pan out this is great news for our growing season and farmers in the region.

16.2F this morning
Off and on snow showers and flurries from before sunrise until around noon yesterday.
