Wintry December 23-26 2022 Winter Weather and Cold

Thank God I work from home 3 days a week and am off starting today-3rd because subzero wind chills Friday morning even here? I’m not leaving the house
You got to step outside, face the wind and inhale once, you don't get this type of rarified air often

From a meteorology standpoint I’m absolute geeking out about this arctic front. This will be such a crazy phenomenon that we just aren’t used to seeing down here. And it’s going to deliver some of the coldest air we’ve seen for Christmas in over a decade … yeah that’ll get my meteorology tail wagging!
I agree with this. So no wintry precip sucks but seeing these insane temp drops, rare true artic blast, single digit wind chills, maybe some 40+ wind gust. Seriously it's why we love weather

In fact if the HRRR is correct, NC could have temps close to 60 on the coast and below zero in the mountains Friday morning. This is what you call a cold front

low teens/upper single digits (which I think happens east of the mountains in some areas) in December is still some of the coldest air in a long long time. Windchill there after front passes is around 0. If I was a cold weenie I wouldnt complain at all about that. It’s one of the coldest December cold snaps in a while. That’s like complaining about getting 4 inches of snow while a area next to you got 6
Coldest Christmas week since 1983.. we’re here for it

Right, a -38 degree windchill in Boone is unheard of.
It's very rare to be sure but not unheard of. I distinctly remember the December 1989 cold blast having wind chill values in the -30s in the Tennessee Valley of northern Alabama. I'd imagine the same cold front probably produced wind chills at least in the -40s in Boone, NC

I was too young to remember the exact temps during the historic Christmas 1983 cold blast (I was only 9 yrs old) but do remember lows dipping just below 0 with highs only in the 20s living an hour outside of Montgomery, AL at the time. Far and away the coldest Christmas of my lifetime.

Maybe, but I hate to be on the fringe of a "historic event" when it's so close to me; kinda like missing out on the Jan 2000 snowstorm, the Feb 2004 snow, or the cold from Feb 2021. Some people like historic cold for it's own sake.

It's pretty easy to see the difference. Here's Florence AL:

I get ur point but what hurts also helps during CAD events.
If u do the same thing for every CAD event in the Carolinas & NE GA since 70 or 80.
The instances were we win would destroy instances like you just pointed out.
The instances that hurt seem to live in our memories much longer,
Also that instance & this particular artic front are much fresher.
