Coronavirus (Stay on Topic)

Also, speaking from my specific area of expertise, it is a common response in a crisis for the human mind to look for a reason why things are not as bad as they appear, and to normalize.
Not that we don’t need to be vigilant with new information and fact check, but I’d be suspicious of random twitter posts uncovering a reason no one else has as to why the current state of affairs is actually no cause for concern. This is not directed at anyone in particular, just musings.
I think it's the fact that many, many, many of us are getting discouraged, and are just downright starving for SOME KIND of good news/trends, however minute they might be. I know I fit into that category.

That is what I think is absolutely nuts. I could definitely see the point of masks(even cloth masks) *if you were limited to spending 15 minutes in the store. But the more likely scenario is it will give people a false sense of security and they will stand closer to others and spend much longer in the stores with very damp masks.

It's been screwed up from the start I mean they made a half a** attempt at controlling customers with one way aisles and supposedly limiting the number(though the evidence of this was weak at best) but it was mostly just glorified for the news I still saw people not social distancing all day even during the first lockdown

But I do find it ironic that was fine along with the protests but you couldn't go to a park or sit down and eat or have a funeral or you'll wait in those lines but you're scared to wait in line to vote it's just all really ridiculous

I’d say they’re typically over prescribed. 90% of people taking them long term don’t need to be. It’s important though that those 10% don’t quit them because they’re told so without evaluating their clinical picture or diagnosis. So I’d ask your doctor first if there’s a reason you/your friend is still on it, and if it’s OK to stop.

As far as discontinuing, a taper over several weeks is needed.

Check out this document: https://ahpnetwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/PPI-Deprescribing2.pdf

It’s written by PharmD’s so I recommend it it’s a good summary.

As far as the H2 antagonist (ranitidine/Zantac) in the article, that was pulled from the market. I’d recommend Famotidine 20mg for rebound reflux in its place.*

(*Also as always, this is what I would recommend and doesn’t signify actual medical advice given by me, as I do not hold a provider/patient relationship with anyone on this forum or the individual who’s post I replied to)
Interesting.. I've had GERD for 20 years, and been on omeprazole for 10. For me, it's been a life saver. I've tried going off the drug several times, and always the crazy heartburn comes back, whatever diet I'm on. I tried Zantac for a few years before my doctor switched me to Omeprazole/Prilosec. (not sure what this has to do with coronavirus, but it's an interesting topic to me.. )

I can make it on topic!

Famotidine is being studied as a possible augmentation to or treatment of Covid-19

So right now it’s been hard to order. Same thing happened with Hydroxychloroquine.

Alabama reports 1,754 new cases and 21 new deaths.
We are obviously going in the wrong direction ?‍♀
My oldest is supposed to start back football practice on Monday after a 2 week hiatus because of 2 positive tests for student athletes. Parents that I've talked to are a little nervous about it

I asked this a few weeks back and didn't get a response, but wouldn't the percent positive being high a good thing right now? I understand you want it low if you are doing large scale asymptomatic testing or in the middle of flu season. However, in the middle of summer where the flu is non-existent, wouldn't a high percent positive be an indication that doctors are diagnosing cases correctly and testing accordingly.

Not exactly. A high percent positive actually shows a lack of appropriate testing, the more you test, the lower your percent positive rate should be. If it keeps going up then you know that you aren’t testing enough of the population to understand the scope of the spread.

ETA: also the cases are not cases being diagnosed by a doctor, this is just molecular testing by labs.

Thanks for the response, and I understand what you are saying, im just looking it from the standpoint that if you are testing someone with symptoms related to a sickness, it would seem to me you would want it to be positive showing right judgement to order the test.

Now that said, Im looking at it from a more mechanical direction and medical is different I know.

What's clear is the train is accelerating. We are racking up cases nationally at surprising rates in some states. What's the next course of action. I think we all know a full lockdown China style isnt going to happen here. Unfortunately that may be the only way to choke off the virus and really dampen its spread.

Ultimately at this point I think we are screwed.

Yep. Experts including the head of the CDC has said masks are basically the only thing that can help, and that would have to be 80% compliance. We are beyond the point at which we can stop this trend. Since it’s so political and polarizing we’re just going to have to suffer. If people wanted their precious bars back and go back to normal life they had the chance to help, we are just a selfish nation and a true global embarrassment. Our best case right now is plateau until fall so our hospitals have more time.

I know opening up has a lot to do with it but looking at a map of infections it seems to me it also lines up well with the areas that are so hot everyone spends a lot of time inside to use the AC. I’m only outside now to garden or swim and most gatherings are inside at least partially as well. Heat may hurt the virus but we don’t spend as much time in the heat from may to October.

I had this same conversation with a co-worker not 20 minutes ago. She said she heard it was suppose to go away in the heat and sun. I asked her how much time she was spending outside in the heat and sun and she said "none if I dont have to".....its got to be aiding in the transmission you'd think.

The ontherocks house got tired of not having all the data in one spot, so we made our own site. Here’s the link if you GA folk want to take a peak. Don’t judge too hard, not a website developer, just a data nerd in quarantine! ?

I don't understand how New York locked down and the virus went away. We locked down and now we're racking up cases. Are they still on lockdown up there? They've had a pretty hot summer too. I imagine people are indoors with AC on up there too, especially if they're still locked down.

Maybe tourism is more in the South than up north because it was so bad up there earlier. I know that in Charleston County, we we're never a hotspot until the past 3 weeks. Now Charleston County is second in the state with infection

Big differences in adherence to lockdowns. My cousin was showing photos on Facebook of the French quarter completely like a ghost town. I never went anywhere here in greenville during lockdown and didnt see dozens of cars and people everywhere. Lowes was a madhouse EVERY day.

We didnt lock down we slow rolled.

This may explain some of it as well.

As others mentioned big adherence to lockdown guidelines up there, more people actually believe in wearing masks, & they were in lockdown before most of us. Many republican led southern states, like Georgia were among the last to shutdown and first to reopen and we are paying the price for that now.

I dont know if lock down helped them or the fact that it just burned through them. Dr. Levitt of Stanford thinks the virus burns out at 15-20% and NYC had antibody tests around 30% months ago.

MLB tested 3,185 players and staff. There were 38 positive tests. Wow some good news!

That's definitely not bad at all!

I will say that a difference between them and regular people is much of the MLB players have been pretty cautious. I saw a quick video of Acuna walking into Truist masked up (that's weird to now be saying that). He rocked out his look...

Edit: Clemson football team: 37 positives

MLB: 38

lol

If Dr Levitt is right CV will start to burn out at 15-20% infected. AL has 41,000 cases, if we calculate as the CDC suggested that there are ten times as many cases, it puts AL at 410,000 cases or 8.3% of the state's population. Will be interesting to watch these numbers.

Lol yeah they got decimated. Thousands died. The virus owned them.

This is awesome. I too have been trying to keep up with all the data for GA and wanted to see how it was back in April and you have the info! Great job!!!

Are they still locked down?
