Coronavirus (Stay on Topic)

I asked this question a few days ago but never saw a response. China is opening many of their factories now but they’re still reporting new cases. Are they just giving up on trying to contain it and getting their economy going again and to prevent supply chain disruption from continuing? Or do they have it under control or see maybe it’s not as bad as initially thought? Any ideas?

With them who really knows, could be a smoke screen to try to make the world think it isn't as bad as initially thought in an effort to get their economy going again, but getting reliable info from them is almost impossible. Would be nice to think that it isn't as bad as initially thought and it's basically flu season and they're back to work.

Not sure but It could be a few things.
First it’s not as bad as the govt reacted at first
Second could be it’s spreading is decreasing
Third could be they can not afford as a country and the people can not afford to not be working anymore and have to take the chance.
Did the people not working get paid for time off and can employers afford to pay when there is no money coming in? Can the govt afford and for how long? Maybe trying to avoid total economic collapse? No idea

Factory activity has begun to improve, but it's still limping along - I think this is more about returning foreign currency inflows to some semblance of normalcy than it is of China getting COVID under control; as we've seen repeatedly over the years, Beijing cares very little about the health & welfare of their citizens. The needs of the the CPC's nomenklatura always come first, and if some more factory workers sicken or die as a result, so be it.

I have a higher chance statistically of dying in a car wreck . I get behind the wheel on average 6-8 times a day . I’m far more worried about that and what I’m gonna eat tomorrow vs a virus that’s killed one person in the US

By the way , obviously just my opinion and I respect yours 100 percent

I have a better chance to see snow in DC but I have had more here this year
 
Has there been a state of emergency declared in any state for the flu? Not being a smart ass just wondering if anyone knows

Governors declare a state of emergency over many things $$$$$$. It doesn't mean build a bunker and start collecting seeds
 
If the cdc can't inform the president the right gender of the only death from this virus why should we believe they can keep track of it

Good question. Is it possible that all of these countries, governments, municipalities, etc. are reacting irrationally?

Until someone can answer the question as to why we are seeing what we're seeing in terms of the massive mobilization of extraordinary efforts to deal with this virus, then all comparisons to the regular flu are invalid.

It's either just another flu and the governments are actually irrationally, or it's substantially more than justtheflu, and many people are thinking about it irrationally.

I don't see many other options, really.

1) The population needs to be made fully aware of what is known about this virus, what is unknown, and when the unknowns will likely become known.

2) How to properly reconcile the reality of how to think about the virus in the context of actions being taken by authorities around the world.

3) People need to be pointed toward resources that describe proper hygiene: How to wash hands, how to use disinfectant, when and why and how to wear a mask, etc.

4) People need to think through what they need if they're going to be stuck in the house for 30 days: Food, toiletries, medicine, pet food, working from home protocols other important items.

5) People need to think about and understand social distancing and when that might be appropriate.

Those are just a few basic things to start with.

Very true. Actually, RC, these thoughts transcend this situation ... they should be neatly tucked in everyone's backpack ... whether it's a 'cane, snow, ice, virus, fire, earthquake, flood ... Problem is, too many live on a screen and never in the world, and most have never had to actually tend and fend for themselves and the folks immediateky around them ... if you (universal "you") haven't done it on a routine basis (taken care of yourself, that is), it's hard to learn on a spur of the moment basis when suddenly looking at the stuff flying out of the fan ...

1. I feel like we know a lot considering it's a new virus and originating from a communist regime. Not sure how anyone can know when the unknowns will be known.

Not saying it's not necessary but is it really government's responsibility to tell people how to keep clean? Actually my wife (she's a school teacher) says they are taught that in pre-k

4. Can't argue with you on this one but people should do that anyway, regardless of coronavirus outbreak. Preparedness just makes sense for any unexpected crisis but, is the individuals choice to do so.

5. Personally I've got social distancing mastered haha. So far no mention of it in school systems but something people certainly need to be prepared for if enacted

I still think its too early to panic. Charlie said it best earlier, I've got a better chance of being killed in an automobile accident than this virus.

This is probably banter but I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s opinions about this . There are some very smart people on here that hardly ever post . But this thread has been enjoyable to me despite the reason why it exists in the first place

Honestly, in this instant information overload, knee jerk overreact government control world we live in, I'm not sure I'd read too much into their response at this stage. Just me though...

The flu kills what 50k Americans every year. Right now the C-19 has killed 1. I feel fairly safe to say we won’t surpass Flu deaths in America.

I’ve seen many people saying once it’s starts to warm up over the next few months it will die off like the flu does and that next year could be really bad ( speaking of the coronavirus )

Anyone know if that’s true regarding warmth killing it off . Hell I didn’t even know that’s why the flu goes away hahah makes sense though

When did the flu take almost 15% of the stock market in a week? When we lose another 10-15 percent next week it won't matter if the flu kills more.

Very true! One of the many reasons why my specific military training will be valuable to me the rest of my life. I might not have thought it at the time but worth every second of pain including the hypothermia!

I don't think any of what I'm advocating for is even close to the realm of panicking. I'm certainly not trying to indicate that anyone should be anywhere near the panicking stage. The things I outlined seem pretty reasonable to me.

You are talking about 2 different things. I’m talking about the C-19. The Market will be fine. We will be back close to 30 before you know it.

I've read reports (not verified) based on some prelim lab tests that this virus does not thrive in humidity, but spurts in drier environs ... if that's the case, summer being wet and RH being less in the winter perhaps summer will result in a hiatus ... we'll see; will be intersting (and sad perhaps) to see what happens in the SH -- their winter/our summer ...

However, there is a case now reported in Iceland, so the reports I've read may be bunk ...

The flu is around all year. I think the warmth and humidity makes it harder to survive outside the body. Also in the winter we tend to all stay inside which doesn’t help.
