Hearing a lot of talk about cutting out the payroll tax. Can someone smarter than me explain what this means? More importantly is this going to be something that I will notice?

Its the FICA tax, look on a check stub where it says FICA.....its social security and Medicaid....the Feds pull out 7%ish from every check you get and your employer matches it. That money is what you get back when you claim SS when you turn 65....if they cut the entire thing then you would see that go to your pocket instead of the government. So the more you make the more you get, for someone making around 50-70k a year its about $100-150 a check...the downside is this is the money the Feds are using to payout SS and Medicaid so by giving it to us the Feds are making a system that is already on rocky ground even worse off.

Let me just guess...they tested Hoiberg for the coronavirus and it came back positive and I'm going to wake up to that conference's tournament having been cancelled.

Correct. If you are making 50,000 you are paying roughly 3,200 in payroll taxes a year. The fed will still collect the income tax from your check. Think fica is around 6.9% at 50,000 and caps out at 135,000. Your employer would save on their matching portion as well. So its more money in your pocket and theirs. Direct way to help. Flip side is to make up for revenue not going into that pot for ss and medicare.

The elimination of the payroll tax should be a huge help to businesses. Your employer pays—out of their own pocket—their half (~7%).

I’m hoping they will eliminate it because that will help us pay our ~20 daycare employees in the event that we have to close for a few weeks.
