Misc Cold Season Complaining

Of course, I know every BBQ joint from Gadsden to Birmingham and no, we do like our pork in Alabama. i will shoot you some suggestions tomorrow. When are you leaving?
Game is at 3:30 eastern but we’ll probably leave around 9 so we can take our time and see the town a bit.

I knew who wrote this before I opened my inbox, but indeed this is from the great mind of Phil Badgett. IMO, the best winter forecaster still at NWS RAH.

Honestly it shocked me to see them post that last night... In a good way.

That’s how I knew Phil posted it haha. He often shares the longer range outlooks which obviously are in no way guarantees, but this fit his usual style and recognition of a favorable regime on the horizon.

Takes less than 6 hours to go from this.

To this.
It's mostly because you're not understanding the context. The former comment was referring to the GEFS finally getting onboard with a colder pattern. And the latter comment was regarding the EPS trending less favorable for a storm signal.

Neither model is going to have the pattern exactly nailed in the 300+ range. But the signals are there on both suites now for a colder pattern.

And I'm seriously wondering why I typed any of that.

Great post. If it helps any of us gain some perspective and understanding, it’s well worth the effort.

Or even 200+ for that matter. Much less 300hr jet extensions or whatever in that range.

Problem is, the one's that need to gain some perspective and understanding, won't.
Good stuff. Once upon a time, I use to just skim through all the things I didn't understand until I saw the pretty colors. Over the last several years, I try to slow down, read & understand what is being discussed. I think that's important with anything you have an interest with in life.

To piggyback on this - before I ever went to NCSU I read the NWS RAH AFDs everyday. By the time I became an intern there those guys (especially Badgett and some others) were literally like celebrities to me. If this is truly a passion, I don’t understand the lack of growth exhibited by some longtime posters.

I’m a similar novice hobbyist in home theater, but after a decade of reading the forums I’ve become a lot more knowledgeable about different subject matters in that arena.

I think it’s like anything else - you need to have the “want to” if you really want to learn. For me, it was the Plymouth State site for soundings and creating model maps plus a few others that had information. That isn’t even to mention reading every discussion from GSP. I also learned a lot from guys on the WWBB like Eric Thomas, Chris Justice, Allan Huffman, etc. It also helps that it doesn’t seem like anyone just stumbles into meteorology - it’s a passion so they are more than willing to share their knowledge.

Now, there’s so much information just readily available that I never had in the late 90s/early 00s. It is so much easier to learn that you just have to absolutely refuse to let anything sink in to remain ignorant.

those folks are insane, i don't dive into those forums a lot but when i do they make us look like child's play (i dabble in hifi audio/vinyl)

Weather and Home theater are both interests of mine too. I was quite active on AVS when CRT projectors were the holy grail of home theater and it's a little sad that now I have my theater to the point I no longer have a desire to upgrade anything. I do pop in there from time to time to see what's the latest and greatest though.
