Arctic April

Severe Watch issued for Wilkes but I’m not expecting the storms to survive into NC.

This storm outside of Roanoke, VA looks nasty. Definitely could see wind gusts of up to 70+ mph downstream in N.C. once the trailing stratiform precipitation is able to establish a strong rear inflow jet, this usually just takes time.

The first batch that went through sort of split MBY and cooled things off. that next one does look bad but looks like the worst may past just to my south. I'll have to check on my kid in Blacksburge in a bit though:-|

This storm near Martinsville, VA is a classic example of what happens when a storm’s strengthening cold pool causes it to deviate from the mean wind (in this case to the right). The intensity and dynamical history of these QLCSs are important for their subsequent prediction (locations impacted, how strong they’ll be, etc) & if CAMs aren’t able to properly handle these, you end up with busted forecasts.
