Everybody's backyard is different of course, but I don't think anyone remembers the SE being "glaciated" (I know you're being facetious). I don't know how old you are or how far back your experience goes, but for many; the 80s and 90s (or even 70s) just had more big storms and colder outbreaks than we get now and they are wishing it could be like that still.

For me, the Jan 18 cold week was very nice and certainly unusual; but I remember a number of weeks that were just as cold; so I wouldn't call it the coldest and it didn't set a record for MBY. It was similar to weeks like Dec 89, March 93, Feb 94, Feb 96, for example, and probably several others in the 80s and even 70s (before my time). For me, a 10 inch snow used to be the standard for a big dog; Jan 87, Jan 88, March 93, back to back snows of Jan 96; and then boom; haven't had one since. I used to be able to count on at least a night or two in the single digits every year, but now it's hard to come by; may not even see it with this historic front this week. I think that is what we are yearning for, more of what we remember.
78-89 by far the best winters and snowiest for nw sc. Grew up on those winters and has been nothing but let downs since. A couple 4-6" deals since then and smaller. Those early years set a standard as I grew up and came to expect a 10"+ every couple years...boy was that wrong. At 15 years old 1988 was unreal and won't be duplicated I feel. Was the perfect storm

The 90s had some good moments....

I know some folks were having a spat about NC climate earlier, but I did spend a lot of in Avery county starting in 95 and up. I'll never forget being up there after the blizzard of 96 and seeing 2 feet of snow, followed by a massive rainstorm that melted most of it, and then followed by a strong arctic front with winds sustained at 40 mph with gusts up to 60 with temps in the single digits the same evening. This was the first moment in my life I saw blowing snow. The record serves my memory correct.

For the CLT area, and really much of the NC Piedmont the 80s were great, but the 90s outside of a couple storms, mainly March 1993 and January 1996, absolutely suck in terms of snow. Even those two storms weren’t
complete hits for the Piedmont. The 90s were more known for ice storms.
I’d agree to that in general. The only notable snowstorm I can remember is the bust in February ‘99 outside of the two you mentioned.

I honestly think you can make a case that the 2010s are the most underrated decade.

January and the first half of February 1996 was definitely some good times. My parents house in Concord had snow on the ground, at least in the shade, from January 6 until the 2nd week of February. The ice storm that preceded the early February arctic blast I get to experience a thunder sleet storm for the first time

Yeah the 2010s definitely had some good ones for me despite see a couple huge busts

I could kill myself for losing the video footage of it... but Mom and I both experienced thundersnow here in Concord NC. I'm never good with dates but it was approx 12yrs ago. We only saw maybe 3in of snowfall but was just thrilled for mom and I to experience it together. I know that is lost on the general population but it was so cool!!

I’m guessing you are talking about March 1, 2009. I was living in the University area then and got 6” of paste from that upper low. Jim Cantore was actually doing live shots about a mile from my apartment and he was on air when huge burst of thunder and lightning struck.

You might have been in the death band at the end of 2014. We also had thundersnow in 2009 with the snowstorm in March that broke a long dry spell of no big storms.

The snow weenie side of me is so desperate to still see some flakeage out of this arctic front I’m rooting for this scenario.?? I’m still hoping against hope for the setup on December 12, 2010 I alluded to a few days ago. Or something similar to what happened back on the night of January 29th this year.

How cold was the game when they nearly ended quincy carter
If you’re referring to the 2003 Wild Card Game, it wasn’t cold that night at all. The high in CLT that day had been in the low 70s and was still in the mid 60s at kickoff. I think the coldest game at kickoff was the final game of the 2009 season… it was 30 at kickoff
