Misc 2021-22 Fall/Winter Whamby Thread

True, I’m sure Charlotte will rack up another 4” while we get a slushy coating.
Even though that band looks more like an inch or 2 for our area I wouldn’t count out the fact that this is under modeled at this point. Usually mesoscale models preform better at seeing exactly how these set ups evolve and trust me we are far from a final solution in strength of that band and placement .. regardless seeing accumulating snow seems likely for a lot of us for a third weekend in a row in January .. this is a good thing as we couldn’t even track a single damn thing last year

I’m sure the HRRR is going to give us some weenie runs to get us going if it does materialize.

I decided to quickly run the numbers over the last 10 years and see how RDU, CLT and GSP airports compared with total snowfall.

RDU had the highest mean of the three over the last 10 winters, at 4.18" (1991-2020 climo 5.2"). GSP was second with 3.73" (climo 3.9"), while CLT was last with 3.25" (climo 3.5"). Interestingly, despite having the highest 30-year mean snowfall, RDU has actually had the least snowfall of the three regions in five of the ten winters. All three regions have had slightly below normal snowfall over the past decade, but RDU had the lowest relative to climo while GSP had the highest. Also, keep in mind I included 2021-22 on this graph, which is a winter currently ongoing, so the final results could be different.

God, our snow climo sucks. I recall RDU used to be well over 6” (maybe 7”?) in the 1981-2010 numbers. Dropping the 1980s hurts.

I'm pretty sure RDU airport averaged a 10" winter once every 3 or so years before 2003-2004. RDU airport hasn't even hit a 10" total once since then. But CLT or GSP haven't either. 2013-14 is commonly referred to as a "good" winter but it was technically below 1981-2010 climo, it's been a long time since we truly had a great winter here.

We haven't had 2 3" events in the same winter in 18 years. That shouldn't be an every year thing but should be more than once every 20 years.

That’s horrible. The fact that RDU didn’t hit 10” in 2009-2010 or 2013-2014 is especially bad since I recall GSO approached 20” both winters. Makes me sad I live here.

We just entered WV on our way home and I let the wife drive so I could watch the 18Z suite roll in. Nice start NAM!

Time to start reeling in this blizzard for Birmingham, the shifts are In our favor this weather map is in agreement. It completely misses the charolette and wilkesboro and Blacksburg and south Carolina and foothills of piedmont and only hits birmingham. its never going to snow in bmx again
Just because you said that, I'm going to pull some strings and get a inch from this upcoming system, and outshine the wilkesboro Piedmont foothills birdmandoom zone.

Hey Zander, did you link the right snow map? Looks like that one gives snow to everybody you mentioned.
