Misc 2021-22 Fall/Winter Whamby Thread

If I had a house, I might discuss gardening more. Instead, all I’ve got is snow.

Bingo ! I agree you should only plant what can A survive in your area and B if not native won’t become super invasive and harm . Though technically by that criteria north Durham can support some palms ! modernweenie. As for grass in Phoenix and Vegas . Disgusting waste of precious resources .
If I had a yard in Phoenix and I had enough money to support the water bill I would definitely water my lawn as much as possible If it's what I wanted.

Yes and drain the coloardo river hurting farmers and mexicans downstream. not too mention straining drinking water resources. Sorry man but those cities are massive and the use of water is inefficient and leading to unsustainable failure. You should read up on it, I mean at one point this past year the water levels at the Hoover dam were getting dangerously close to the point where it would not be able to produce any hydroelectric power which would be catastrophic for millions. All so some people could grow grass in the desert? lol.

If you can pay for it you can do whatever you want on your own property.

You'll see.
Ill see what? Check this out. 90% of our winter veggies are grown out there. The US declared a water shortage for the first time ever there meaning FORCED reductions which are going to impact FARMERS first. Not the phoenix green lawn folks. We are a society and proper use of our resources is important to ensure continued access to them. No one has a green lawn when the water runs out.

The fake grass industry is big there. Also fun to water the fake grass so you don’t burn your toes.

Not to get into politics, but when tadpoles are being protected in spite of California farmers needing the water in the Central valley, That's all I need to know. It's all politics, there's enough water out there.

I remember back in the early 2000s Greensboro used to have water restrictions. I think Randleman Lake took care of that issue, though. Fortunately, I lived in High Point and didn’t have that issue, though.

I dont mean to regulate water access but when your in the middle of a massive drought, your power plant is about to fail, and a large source of our nations food is about be slammed yeah something kind of has to be done to avoid disaster.

Or if you really like green lawns live out east where the rain fall is ample.
It doesn't take a lot of water to keep a green somewhat healthy lawn. I would wager that most of the home owners or whoever is watering in that region is overwatering. It's a huge issue in this country

I honestly have never watered my yard, good soil is all you need.

You probably have enough clay/loam in your soil profile that you can keep more water in the root zone. Here I have so much sand I have to water after about 7 dry days

Thick layer of topsoil from decades of farming. Front yard was a cow and hay field for years.
