Looks like the sleet monster has already shown up on Charlotte’s doorstep. Having this initial band show up during the middle of the afternoon cuts out the few extra degrees of boundary layer cooling you desperately need in a storm like this

Thanks for explaining that reason for sleet at onset. It also appears to my untrained eye that we may get way less precip according to radar returns south and west from the Charlotte area? Is this correct?

The ice accrual you saw earlier is absorbing latent heat as it melts away, keeping your temp at freezing a bit longer

You may already know this, but others may not, but this is completely normal and happens in all of these events. The radar beam is increasing with height as it goes away from the radar, so it looks like it is snowing all around it but in reality the column is slowly moistening with height. That's why the ring will slowly close in as the column moistens downward with time.

This is why when you look at higher tilts, the ring of radar returns is closing in.

It's amazing how uniform the temps are across the Atlanta metro. Usually the Northern burbs would be a few degrees cooler, but it looks like everyone is between 31 and 33.

The NWS says we could start seeing snow a little earlier than expected, in the next few hours for the triangle. That band is filling in faster.

The upstate is finally gonna get heavy consistent rates here in a few hours... the problem is we probably stay sleet at that point, but it's not a given, could go back to snow. I wouldn't give up hope yet.
Rates have dropped off here but i'm still lighting snowing after a brief period of mixing with sleet.
