They get plenty of money. Now they actually have to spend wisely and with receipts. Oh no

All the issues revolve around the Federal Government's decision to pick NOAA as its test subject in its 'BAS' consulting contract with Accenture Federal Services, a US subsidiary of their 12.5% taxed, Irish Incorporated Parent Company, Accenture. Accenture was tasked with managing the integration of NOAA's legacy financial system into a cloud-based one. They had complete access to the financial files, and NOAA Officials were unable to validate any of their information. There were over 1,400 complaints a month from NOAA employees and managers over unpaid bills and salaries, as well as unapproved payments and overpayments.

Reports and Complaints highlight the numerous technical and human errors that have plagued NOAA since October 2023. Server outages, mismatched data, and confused employees all caused hold-ups in conducting the everyday business of government."

"Despite [Biden's] Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s assurance to Congress in May that 'the system is now working,' the parent agency of the National Weather Service continued to be plagued by an inability to pay bills, inaccurate alerts, and incorrect information, according to a database of 17,000 employee complaints obtained by Bloomberg Government."

The National Weather Service Director Ken Graham has conceded that the financial chaos has hurt morale at an agency that’s suffered years of burnout and attrition. The National Weather Service had 16% fewer non-management employees in May 2024 than it did in September 2010, according to figures tracked by its union. https://news.bgov.com/bloomberg-gov...litchy-finance-system-draws-17-000-complaints

Over $60 Billion a year on consulting fees so external middlemen can indirectly communicate the internal processes of NOAA to the IT Service and Cloud Storage Provider. They were tasked with making the process more efficient and cost-effective. In 2021, there security was breached with ransomware, allowing hackers access to military weapons research from Lockhead Martin, as well as the PII of 33,000 employees. Accenture Federal Services might have13,000 employees with access to PII and Classified Information, but somehow, they are less of a security threat than Elon Musk and DOGE?

While it's sad that NOAA personnel were incorrectly terminated, it's pretty F-ing clear to me that the federal agency was grossly mismanaged by AFS, and thankfully, the situation is be rectified by the Trump Administration. I'm not going to be swayed by these emotional arguments. AFS has been lobbying government officials for decades in order to secure contracts, and politicians have been allowing them to steal money from the taxpayers. Me. There's a trail of OIG reports detailing all AFS' F-ups. Politicians keep giving them contracts, and the media continues to bury it.

Tbh, I buy Chattanooga. Parts of its metro are likely higher, but I think downtown is in the TN valley.

I’m less certain on Monteagle, but I again can see here that there are more mountainous areas nearby.

I-24 is a windy road, but in the Chattanooga metro, I know it cuts straight through the valley and it’s why it’s pretty busy (at least it was when I was there in the fall).

I really wish we would do away with the time change already. Work tonight was stupid unnecessarily because of it. One thing I find interesting is that a lot of Asia including China got rid of DST years ago. People are going back to standard time basically instead of the other way around

I get people want more light in the evening but as much as the early winter sunsets suck if we stayed on DST year round our sunrise would be 835 in January. It's 743 today... Not great

And it's even later up north

That certainly changes things a lot. Thank God the truth is finally coming out.....

Don’t even have to go north. Atlanta would be knocking on the door of a 9am sunrise in winter if we used DST in those months. It’s crazy. Figure an overcast, rainy December morning into that and you’re looking at pitch black dark well after 9am. I’ve seen those days over there where it’s cloudy and dark after 8am and thought WTF how do people stand it. All that for it to still get dark at 6pm just seems pointless.

There’s an argument to be made that we should adjust the time zones to better account for latitude. That would help the folks further north with their shorter winter days. Down here there’s a legit argument using DST currently in spring/summer actually harms segments of the economy that rely on outdoor activities and I agree with it. Outdoor dining would actually be practical in most of the south if we had an extra hour of “cooling” in the evenings. I’ll gladly eat out if it’s 88 instead of 95 at 6pm.

If we can’t do any of that, I’d at least support us going back to the DST schedule pre-George W Bush changes. We start and end so early now it’s a shock to the system in the mornings. It’ll be black as night tomorrow morning going to work but if we waited a few more weeks it’s just be civil twilight and that’s an easier adjustment. I’d even go so far as to say make it April 1 to October 1.

Based on what happened in 1974, I think it would be a mistake to try year round DST again. Also, Trump has said he prefers year round standard time instead.

For those who don’t know, year round DST was passed in January of 1974 to save on energy during an energy crisis. After initially having lots of support, it failed miserably that winter due to darkness for kids on the way to school leading to increased deaths and injuries. So, although it was supposed to last at least through the winter of 1974-5, it was canceled in Nov of 1974.

Has anything changed since 1974 that would make it safer this time? Opinions?

One thing I find interesting is most of Asia including China which has more people than us got rid of DST years ago and they survived 🤔 🤔 🤔

Europe only does it because we do...

Let me put it another way every country that has picked one isn't picking DST

That certainly changes things a lot. Thank God the truth is finally coming out.....

I didn't even hear about these layoffs until I saw it on the forum. I read the arguments from lawsuit last night. NOAA Officials advised Staffers to respond. Union told them 'no'. Media reports conflated officials from other agencies with NOAA. Media reports confused separate guidelines for different agencies dealing with varying degrees of sensitive information. There was no security risk as Doge EEs are monitored. As I suspected, the data breach was a long-standing problem resulted from EEs opening suspicious e-mails. The problem was management.

A US federal judge declined Friday to block employees of the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”) from accessing sensitive US Treasury data, finding that retiree and union plaintiffs failed to show an imminent risk of irreparable harm.

“There is no direct evidence that any of these mistakes resulted in improper disclosure outside of the federal government or made such disclosure more likely in the future”. https://ecf.dcd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/show_public_doc?2025cv0313-42

Later sunrise wouldn't bother me at all as I head to work before sunrise most of the year except right around the daytime peak. However, working ten hour days during the winter, I go to work in the dark and go home in the dark. Would be amazing to have a hour of daylight to work outside when it's cool.

If people are going to want to do something it's going to be in the evenings so better to have it light then. Early in the morning I'm going to be at work anyway so don't really care if it's dark then.

This is some weird weather. It’s colder in South Georgia than in Northern Michigan !
All I keep thinking about is why couldn't it have been about 10 degrees colder today. Perfect 500mb low track..and all this precip would have made for a historic snow storm. Instead I have gotten close to 1.5 inches of 43 degree rain. Sigh.......

Thank you for the clarification...tired of all the bashing of the Doge and what they've done in the weather community. When obvious changes are needed the long run we will all benefit hopefully.

It’s 68 and sunny in Winchester Tennessee…. “Tim’s Ford Lake” haven’t seen a cloud all day. 200 miles makes all the difference

No way we benefit. They will not stop until the NWS is no more. I'm already hearing they want to lay off 1000 more at NOAA.

When are we starting a thread for this weekend? If this was a NC snowstorm threat, there would have been a thread a week ago.
and you'd be wrong in that thread again just like the last one where it wasnt going to be a "big deal outside of elevation", right?
