Misc Cold Season Complaining

Haha yeah I’ve actually talked to a few colleagues about this. People will be forced to pay high-dollar for a trusted name that is willing to take on the liability of issuing real-time alerts and basically being on call 24/7 365. People will regret it if NWS goes down, I guarantee it.
Let’s see, you been doing this 13 years? What ya worth about 80k in salary at minimum with 30k in benefits ? 110k a year, I need a few interns/ new grads that I can pay bottom dollar to help ya out can’t afford other senior Mets so another 200k for like 4-5 fresh inexperienced Mets, and now that the gfs is trash we need to pay for a model, I can’t afford the fancy euro so we will pay 10k a month for the dgex that’s all you get … and let’s see I got a few sponsors so before every forecast I need you to shout out the bojangles sweet tea chicken supreme dinner and the Bo berry biscuit … oh and uhh I got some nat gas sponsors so around every October I need you to start tweeting #NATGAS in all caps and screaming ice age … it’s good for business …

Let’s see for our services … we start at 199.99 a month for family that gives up to 3 family members access to our app, a basic 7 day forecast , and you get alerted 5 minutes before a tornado and 2 hours before a hurricane … got to pay more for earlier alerts … for businesses we start at 2500 a month , if you need seasonal forecasts like a farmer we start at 5500 a month …

And I got a blazer that looks like a nascar suit, it’s gon be emblazoned with all our sponsors… you are sponsored by bojangles , Tampax, miralax, and dominion energy

I have tried to read back through, sorry. Im not a big news / politics guy. What exactly is the reason for targeting NWS ? Is it bc of the Air Force wanting to control the weather rumor or is it something else ? honestly asking bc I have no clue why a president would even care about weather good or bad. I wouldnt, I mean id still be in here tracking pbp of the gfs model on a winter threat but other than that

"Mr President we have to go" "Ohhh relax tell Kim Jong I will be there shortly the gfs is only out to 36hrs and I need to see if it started the NW trend"

Isn't it odd that so many professional meteorologists like myself, @Webberweather53 @Ross and so many others all across the country who have a long history of putting out solid, comparable to NWS forecasts yet never call for them to be slashed or reduced? It's only the keyboard warriors who've never been in the hot seat or understand the commitment and sacrifice made by NWS mets that are calling for it.

I certainly don't benefit personally much from NWS existing (ignoring all of the NCEP data I use every day, but still not as much as 99% of the population does) and heck, who knows, I might have an opportunity to start something if they go under and yet I am as vehemently against it as anyone. Not to mention that I'm a conservative through and through. You'd think that would make people stop and think, but alas.
People just dont trust subject matter experts anymore in almost every field. They think they somehow know better despite their lack of experience, education etc. That bothers me greatly because in librarianship, you are charged with finding the best sources possible.

They claim it's unnecessary spending. But it's not. I think it's because both political parties have made weather so political the last several years. Some push climate change and some don't. The admin right now doesn't push climate change and many at NWS do so, I think that's why they are targeting the NWS. Honestly a shame on both political sides for making weather a political issue. Disappointing

This is incredibly sad. I worked at NWS RAH 30/hrs a week for a year and had exactly 0 conversations about climate change in that office. You don’t even have time to talk about such stuff most of the time and even on the down evening shifts it was never once discussed.

I miss the days of having to go to the library to do research for a paper. Wikipedia and the internet have ruined a lot of things.

Yeah, you have got to be careful with the tools you use these days. I dont even blame the students sometimes because their parents have such poor information literacy for the most part. There has been some cool stuff created though, like automatic citation software.

Wikipedia is great tho, as much as teachers ragged on it in school it’s honestly not the worst, those neck bearded nerds do a good job with it
I can get lost reading Wikipedia for hours and it is certainly better than it was in the beginning. Too many people don't read the citations though.

i hear this a lot- i don't consider "climate change" political. it was not a made up mechanism created by liberal opinion columnists. climate change is what it is. the data is harsh and overwhelming. personally i think smart meteorologists will and should use it to contextualize what is "normal" and "not normal" going forward for certain weather events. the reason it becomes political is because its mitigation depends on government action (or lack thereof), which becomes a proxy for each political side.

to your point, i actually totally agree- i think noaa/nws cuts were swift and quick because the incoming administration associates it with climate policy in a knee-jerk behavior. if i had any criticism, i think that sometimes meteorologists/climate scientists can exaggerate the effects of influence of climate change some, which is impossible to truly quantify, in order to agitate a political response. this is a tactic i disagree with and does not represent the professional at large in good light. i think it's easy to spot and it doesn't help solve a problem that will continue to intensify. i don't like that it's come to this- i preferred when the conservative response to this issue was a push for more nuclear power like mccain did in 08.

In my opinion there shouldn’t be any liability in weather forecasts. If you tell me tomorrow is sunny and I encounter a severe storm that’s just weather to me. No one is responsible for my unpreparedness other than me. But a forecast does enable us to have a good idea of what an upcoming week can look like.

On an individual level that may be true, the issue comes in when you're responsible for the safety of other people or have to make go/no-go calls. Free, accurate data is critical there. The paid services my employer uses are so generic it's laughable.

I'll admit I'm out of touch so what's up with just commenting "delete"?
Because we can’t delete posts now so usually if we make a post and realize it’s in the wrong thread or something we’ll just edit the post to say “delete” instead of leaving a misplaced post in the wrong thread

I had no idea, weird but I'm not the tech guy so idk

I love seeing the severe weenies take a GFS op run at face value 220+ hours out but they’ll burn the snow weenies at the stake for doing the same in the winter. It’s no different than winter weather. Get it under 72 hours you snow trolling clowns.
all that build up for about 6 minutes of wind here this morning is crazy
