Wintry Winter 2024-25 Discussion

I agree with Webber in saying pretty warm and dry until mid-late Feb and then maybe a couple of cold shots into early March. Of course as we have seen the past several years, it is a difficult forecast and we may be totally off when all is said and done.

Hope it’s a killer season up there man
Man I hope so. I've been dealing with a badly broken leg since February from a freak ski accident up here, but hopefully I'll make it back to the slopes before the end of the season. As long as we have a cold and snowy season, I'll be content.

Webber never said that so guess you meant someone else?

I don’t think it matters who says what, things are changing and there is no way to predict anything. I wouldn’t get upset if it’s predicted wall to wall warm or happy for cold! Last year was supposedly a lock and we were going to have extended periods of cold and a lot of snow( based off of location) and that blanked! Long range is as bad as these updated models!

We're going to continue to skew warm indefinitely. However, at some point, it will snap back hard.

I don't put much stock into long range either especially after the crappy winters we have seen.

I'll take my chances with a neutral weak as pond water La-Nina. Especially in light of the past couple of years.

My eyes are always fixated with the Pac Jet and PNA signal. That tells the tale for the SE 9 times out of 10.
Anyway encouraging news. Roll the dice with neutral is always preferable to Strong el-ninos or strong La-Ninas.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A weak La Niña is likely to develop over the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean over the next few months, according to the latest NOAA outlook.

The chance of seeing a strong, long-lasting La Niña event is becoming less likely over the 2024-2025 winter season. The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) is expecting to see equatorial Pacific waters to continue to cool, but not much different than average. Average equatorial Pacific Ocean waters is known as the ENSO-neutral period.

A weak La Niña winter is expected despite the North American forecast model trending slightly warmer, indicating no La Niña and more of an ENSO-neutral winter. “A weaker La Niña implies that it would be less likely to result in conventional winter impacts, though predictable signals could still influence the forecast guidance. In summary, La Niña is favored to emerge in September-November (60% chance) and is expected to persist through January-March 2025,” was stated in the CPC’s discussion.

Hunga Tonga still impacting the climate that people are debating the size of the temp spike. Not expecting much here in Asheville, but would be nice after Helene.
