Wow I didn't notice until you just said that. I can't remember the last time he wasn't out in the field for a storm.

I think TWC put him in Time Out for a few storms, I’m sure he will be back for the snow storms.
One thing I noticed is despite an historic hurricane, neither this board nor the other board crashed that I'm aware of. Can you imagine an historic snowstorm? The board would be crashing every hour. Clearly there are more winter weather fans than tropical fans !

Bit of a funny story. I got a call for a job interview asking to schedule for today on Tuesday, about around closing time for that place. I hesitated, thinking about Michael incoming and about how a lot of the city was probably going to shut down on Thursday, but ended up saying yes to today.
Needless to say, when I tried to get in contact with them yesterday I didn't reach anybody and when I got there (just in case it was open) I saw they were closed. My theory was they closed the office after the morning yesterday. Hopefully they call me when they come back in.
Also: My dad talked through the happenings late night, and then said he thinks the power went off 3 times. First he saw the blue light on the DirecTV receiver at about 1:20ish AM (which comes on after the power cuts back on), then the next time with the power, the radio in the kitchen started playing classic music (which I think is what one of the news radio stations from around here has when it's in the late night hours), and then the next time I heard the microwave beeping.
I didn't sleep well (and I'm not sure it had to do with anxiety) and combining it with the electronics that will do stuff when there's a power surge wasn't fun. IIRC on what my dad said, I think probably about an hour or so after I first drifted off was the classic music on the radio. Then an hour later, the microwave.

Out of curiosity, given the context of Michael's landfall, I went and dug up the satellite and radar imagery from Andrew.
The difference between the two overall sets of imagery is astounding, to me at least. I don't much remember much of the imagery from the 90s, and obviously Moore's Law meant it was inevitable, but the evolution of the technology in my lifetime so far gets me all giddy inside, warm and fuzzy like.

Here's something in the you learn something everyday category.
Before this year I didn't realize that in half of the pacific, it's still called a hurricane and not a typhoon. Kind of dumb I didn't know that.

I actually didn't pay attention to the tropics all that much at all until Hurricane Matthew in 2016 to be honest (and the reason I did was because I started hearing about the models trending west and a Georgia football game possibly being affected by it), missing storms like Patricia (my memory is shot but if the name of the storm isn't familiar to me, I didn't have any knowledge of it at all, and I didn't realize that Patricia was a thing until literally yesterday). If it was a big US mainland news story or storms like Andrew (storm stories) then I likely know but if it wasn't then I don't.
Like I started browsing tropicaltidbits even further and after staring at that for a moment I was like wait a minute, some parts of the Pacific, it's called a hurricane too?
Even now, I passively pay attention to the tropics unless it's going to affect me or could.
I am just going to assume that everyone who rode out the storm were unable to evacuate for whatever reason. I refuse to believe that anyone would willingly put their lives in danger when they knew this monster was headed straight for them. People are not that dumb.

To be fair to some that didn't leave, there's like three different camps of people here: some people who chose to ride Michael out were preparing for a Cat. 2, not a strong Cat. 4. I think the people in that camp very likely would have left had they known that far enough in advance in terms of days, not hours. Then you have your camp of people who may be elderly, disabled, and lack financial means to suddenly pack up and evacuate for an approaching hurricane. It's nice you're giving the benefit of the doubt here, however there are still a camp of people who are definitely that dumb, complacent and stubborn when it comes to evacuating. I can never comprehend why you wouldn't evacuate if you know you live immediately right along the coastline to a beach and you have the means to do so. At least camp out in a freakin' hotel, don't be boneheaded and ride it out in your home. I don't know why, but these kind of people just like to learn the hard way and play a dangerous game of Russian Roulette with Mother Nature. Some survive and learn the lesson to not do it again, others unfortunately aren't that lucky. Sorry for ranting, this has always been a sore spot for me when it comes to hurricane season and landfalling hurricanes.
If there were indeed people who had the ability to evacuate and chose not to, they should be charged with some sort of crime if they put any children in harm's way. Child endangerment maybe ?

Yes but many people don’t have the means to leave. Unless the city government wants to pay for their hotel room, food and transportation then I don’t see them having a case

That’s a really good point. To evacuate you’ll have to have a place to stay. If you don’t have family/friends within driving distance you either need to buy plane tickets or pay for a hotel somewhere. Either route would be a bit expensive and you might have to stay days or weeks if the damage is bad.

I actually read an article from the MSN homepage about a lesser fortunate community in the panhandle where people couldn't simply just get up and leave. The case it focused on was an older man that had his driver's license expire when he went down to Florida and had trouble renewing, so he just didn't drive, when he gave his explanation, the police gave an authorization that allowed him to drive, and because he simply didn't have anywhere to go, he went from said community to Medart, FL, and hunkered down there for the storm, then drove back after it was over.
Searching this, there's more than one case of this down there. Trailer parks with residents that couldn't leave. It's a shame. A lot of the panhandle of FL outside of the three major cities (Pensacola, Panama City, and Tallahassee) seemed pretty rural when I was down there in the past. Southwest Georgia probably has more of the same as well and with there, there's the crops as well.

A lot of Florida is not what it's made out to be. There's the big cities that have the northern transplants that make it have a northern feel, but a lot of Florida is still very much southern.

Let me preface this by saying I am a staunch Republican, voted for Trump, etc. So my sister sent me this video In FB messenger explaining the Hurricane Micheal was geo engineered and designed to strike the “red political” areas of Panama City, Mexico Beach, etc. to stop people from voting, really?!? Where on God’s green earth do people come up with this stuff?

Yes I have heard rumblings of this too and I would like to know if its even remotely possible, in a minute way to manipulate canes in any kind of way. Or even being discussed. I think I heard met discussion about this before..? There was a storm and bad flooding in NC for 2016 elections If I'm remembering and that maybe when I heard some chatter about it too. Nutty Crazy
