So, the 99 high was recorded at 2:59PM whereas the 3PM hourly reading was only 93. This is truly bizarre!
Best i could do on my tempest was 91. Seems crazy that 30 miles away would be +8 especially since we don't have a lot of local meso effects that would change temps dramatically

Yeah, something is up with how the thermometer/housing is set up. Could be the geography at or around the site. Maybe a slight landscape angle towards the south could cause more directed sunlight/heat. I've noticed that during precipitation events, temps tend to be more uniform with surrounding sites. That would help point towards the idea of more directed sunlight/heat. But (arguing with myself) that wouldn't explain why overnight temps can run signifyingly higher (...but not all the time). Maybe the packed clay soil????? Just some thoughts

But, what about the 6F change within just a few minutes at RDU near 3PM under no significant change in sky condition and no big wind shift?

Id be interested to look up if there was a departure or landing on the side with the sensor at this time, seems like most of the tracking sites have that far back behind a paywall now

Maybe that's still a ground angle issue. The ground synced up with the sun(earth) movement to direct heat towards the thermometer. Like Indian Jones with his staff. haha

my backyard davis fluctuates but i would say that even on the most turbulent days temps remain in a tight 3-5 degree window. i know nws has been out there and has said "everything is calibrated fine" but... something isn't adding up. rdu has racked up a streak of these high temp outperformances that are statistically highly unlilkely

ILM talking upper 90s away from the beaches in NESC/SENC later this week. One week out from our last rain the corn is already curling up and grass is getting silvery and brown in places.

It’s toasty again around Lake Lynn this afternoon. I’d say approaching mid 90’s depending on cloud cover. Looking forward to RDU somehow hitting 99 again.

Yeah well see. They've already backed off about next weeks heat here and it was getting hype at one point too

I think yesterday here proved there's no point looking weeks out

I mean yes it is about to be summer I'm sure we're gonna have a bad stretch sooner or later
Bingo! Last week all the hype was a blistering , deadly, apocalyptic heatwave here this week! We have 2 days that may touch 90 and then back to lower 80s and 50s at night!
The hype train doesn’t stop in the summer! 1780946938840.png

Well, what do you know? RDU was once again at 93 as of the 3PM hourly! But the differences vs yesterday are stark with partly cloudy vs sunny and E winds vs hot SW to W winds. So, despite yesterday’s stunning 99, I’d still be shocked if RDU were to get close to 99 again today.

That 591 ridge might just save us. Someone would pile up the rain with this.
I don't have a lot of faith in the SER holding up fronts anymore outside of fall and winter. Seems like we have had a lifetime of summer frontal passages in just the 2020s
