So, the 99 high was recorded at 2:59PM whereas the 3PM hourly reading was only 93. This is truly bizarre!
Best i could do on my tempest was 91. Seems crazy that 30 miles away would be +8 especially since we don't have a lot of local meso effects that would change temps dramatically

Yeah, something is up with how the thermometer/housing is set up. Could be the geography at or around the site. Maybe a slight landscape angle towards the south could cause more directed sunlight/heat. I've noticed that during precipitation events, temps tend to be more uniform with surrounding sites. That would help point towards the idea of more directed sunlight/heat. But (arguing with myself) that wouldn't explain why overnight temps can run signifyingly higher (...but not all the time). Maybe the packed clay soil????? Just some thoughts

But, what about the 6F change within just a few minutes at RDU near 3PM under no significant change in sky condition and no big wind shift?

Id be interested to look up if there was a departure or landing on the side with the sensor at this time, seems like most of the tracking sites have that far back behind a paywall now

Maybe that's still a ground angle issue. The ground synced up with the sun(earth) movement to direct heat towards the thermometer. Like Indian Jones with his staff. haha
