Observations January 3-6th. 2018 Winter Storm Observations

Moderate snow near McEntire Air Base. Sticking a little bit. Every thing changed once I got of Columbia and into the Lower Richland area.
Bask in it.
I was reading some stuff on Twitter, and although I hoped it'd happen, it's rather funny to see the dude with egg on his face. He continued to call for accumulating snow in Columbia in the face of it clearly being a "no go." Once, he was called out on it after it was clear that wasn't gonna be the case.... Knowing he was defeated, he resorted to lying and said (paraphrased), "He was in Eastern North Carolina for work, so he'll see a good bit (of snow)." Haha!
He's since deleted that portion of his his tweet and several others throughout the day.

I saw some video there in Lower Richland area in between Hopkins and Sumter, and there was a moderate snow.
This storm almost reminds me of February 2004. Snow to my west, north, northwest, and northeast. Today, it's snow to (of all places) my southeast, east, and even slightly northeast.

Was in Lyons GA this morning, they had a dusting when I left and w0, and ended up with about an inch from what I'm told.... I traveled to Soperton, Ga, about 20 miles away, and all they had were flurries for about an hour with 0 accumulation!

Lol there wasn't a winter weather advisory out for Moore County and there's a solid dusting already
I can't complain, picked up close to a dusting in Eastover. Most snow I've seen since early 2014.

That was nice while it lasted, sun's shining brightly now. This really could have big for us with less dry air and a further west precip shield. Congrats to the Eastern Carolinas, some great stuff in Sumter and of course on the coast.

Light accumulating snow did get up to around Waynesboro, GA. Aka about a 15 minute drive from me lol.

Well, a few flakes falling here in Randolph County. I didn’t expect to see anything this far NW. since every flake is sticking, I’m calling it a light dusting!

Honestly looks like Charleston and areas around it were the biggest winners of this event so far. Widespread 4-7 inches. Congrats!

I have more to show. The snow has tapered down to very light snow now so 7" will likely be my final tally!

That looks incredible. Roads look like a total mess though...don't see how you're getting out of the neighborhood tonight and maybe even through tomorrow. Think you were in the jackpot.
You outdid yourself from February 2010. Cool!
Imagine if this storm was a bit slower.

Winding down here. An unexpected heavy dusting that covered everything including the roads.

Just got a report out of Downtown Greensboro that roads are covered.
Here in Northwest Greensboro, 10 miles north, absolutely nothing. Incredible gradient.

It got damn close man. Missed it by 0.7" at the airport for a one day total. Charleston KCHS officially reported 5.3" (daily record smashed - previous was a trace in 2002)
Also likely broke the most snow in a 24 hour period in January, plus I think the previous highest monthly total in January was 1.9" shattering that.
3rd greatest 24 hour calendar day snowfall.
6.0" (12/23/89) - all day event.
5.4" (2/10/73)
5.3" (1/3/17) - airport got most of this in 2 Hours! Snowfall predominately in a 5 hour span!

Maximizing what little moisture there is, high ratio snow ripping right now about .75 so far but should go up quickly

Got a nice dusting here in Chatham. Glad it got this far west, as I didn't think it would make it.

Summary of storm at my location: I had freezing rain for like 4 hours (that started 6:15 AM) and then hour+ of sleet. Then went back and forth between sleet and snow. Then finally all snow about 12:30. Total accumulation about 1.5" of sleet and snow plus close to 0.25" ZR. This was easily the biggest winter storm here since 12/1989. After it was finished, I took a very enjoyable walk and really soaked this in as who knows how many years it will be before the next one like this.
