Pattern January 2021 - Joyless January

There's pros and cons for living on either side of the mountains. For Christmas we saw how the cold was able to push quickly in and give our friends in E. Tennessee a white Christmas; while the mountains delayed the cold for us east of the mountains. On the flip side of things those same mountains can give us CAD. Here's the euro for the discussed event. Notice a 30 degree difference from E Tennessee to the CAD areas.

The lack of variety in temperature this month has been nothing short of remarkable at RDU so far.

We have not had a high temperature above 57°F all month, nor have we had a high temperature below 40°F. We also have not had a low temperature above 44°F or below 25°F. Normally we hit 60°F at least a few times during January, and we typically get below 20°F at least once.

Testament to -NAO/+EPO. No SE ridge (so lack of warmth), but AK vortex keeps most of the cold air locked away into Eurasia. You just end up w/ a consistently seasonable pattern day after day.
