Wintry Jan 23-27 Winter Storm Obs

Thinking about all the sleet we got in the 1/21/25 storm down here in CHS. Legit was 1+” even 2” of sleet. Roads are gonna be a skating rink in the Upstate and Charlotte

Somehow still have many stations around the area at 31-32 as that band is knocking on the door.

It isn't fun as it really hit my body hard when I was out, but this is impressive CAD. If it were a couple degrees colder like the ICON was, then oof. But luckily should end up over 32, barely.

Because the rates aren’t really that intense (think a summer or spring shower) but it’s coming down at a sufficient clip it’s piling on super fast. I want to say I was around 0.1” before the line came through and in 45 minutes of ZR I matched that. There’s at least another 3 hours I would say? As long as you don’t get under an intense band you’ll be all ZR or just about all ZR and it piles up fast

For folks to the east of Greenville SC: Speaking for South Greenville, (north Greenville) is a different story. It’s currently 64 degrees above our head 850mb (5000ft) and the cloud ceiling is around 925mb. (900ft) We are having a deep cold layer right now which is causing more sleet than freezing rain. However, the shallow cold layer around 1000-2000 feet (900-925) mb is shrinking and becoming shallow which will give less time for rain to refreeze into sleet out west moving east. The good news is for southern Greenville is there is more sleet than freezing rain for the moment.

Ice is hanging on in the trees between My house and Roswell.
My station steady at 32.5, but I had ice on my truck at that temp last night
Neighbor 32.2
Jeep 32

Variant makes the best New England IPAs in the Atlanta area. They are open with no power, cheers.

Freezing rain can’t happen at 33 degrees

Funny enough, I believe it can and does often in certain areas. Say it were a cold few days/night and you have a cold rock solid ground and objects.... just because the air temp has warmed to 33, does not mean the surface temp is above freezing. And if it freezes on contact, it is officially an obs of ZR. Kind of the opposite of snow at 40.

The wedge in NE GA is extremely impressive. It has held on despite all this warm air from the Gulf. Only at 33 degrees, forecast was to be in upper 30s by now. Very interested to see if temps increase any more today. Residual icing should be huge problem in morning.

Not to derail the much more important conversation in here, but it’s likely more of a calibration issue than a freezing at 33. I had ice accrual at 32.7 last night, but my neighbors was 32.0

Pretty much same here so I'm not sure where it's coming from
Just learning the micro obs from this storm in the area, I am sure there are hilly areas around Roswell, E Cobb, that still have depressions sitting below 32. You cannot cancel the warning if that is the case.
