Pattern Jan 2025 Powered by Rheem AC

In Georgia if there's 1 little patch of ice on the road they will close schools.
That is because we have hills and elevation changes here. When cars travel over the smaller amounts of snow we get here, it compacts and creates ice. Very few have equipment and skill to be able to drive on hills packed in ice. This is why I-75 shut down the other day, and 285 again in 2014.

Southerners are terrible drivers even on snow covered level ground, but we get a slightly unfair rap for driving in frozen precip.

Damp, cool, foggy, and misty the last two days here. The cool isn't so much a novelty as the addition of fog and mist is. It's been a steady ~55F with on and off fog/drizzle/mist and very low clouds since early morning yesterday. Windy as well. North FL got a snowstorm. Down here in Key Biscayne we got the London experience.

14 this morning. Been a cold month/winter. Also been a dry month. Need to start getting some moisture in the Ground during Feb after it thaws out. Top 5 coldest January on record at GSO a lock now.

Yeah I think that’s been our issue overall we’ve had no southern stream, making it dry with our trough, cold. I’m sure the SE ridge will be here soon and we’ll rain significantly.

17.8 this morning. 4th straight day of teens or colder, with one single digit day. 10th morning in the teens this month. Heat bill killing me lol
This! They do not install heavy duty heat pumps in GA and to make matters worse, my defrost sensor and one of my heating strips have gone on the blink. Luckily both are still under warranty but parts may or may not here today.

I just had to replace my whole system. I do miss the warmth of a gas system on mornings like the past week.

Ouch! Sorry my friend. Ironically and per this thread, mine is a Rheem and they did stand behind the unit. Its just a little cool in the house. I can only manage 62f in the house with it 15f outside. I suppose another log on the fire will be the call today.

We just put a Rheem in so I'm glad to hear the honored the warranty. Our last unit was 19 years old so we new it was going to go. We went a week without heat but the woodstove kept us toasty. It would be a bit chilly in the morning since I wasn't going to wake up all night just to keep it going.

It looks like the last week of January will return most us us to normal or above normal without any precipitation. I'll be happy with a break from the much below temperatures and my antique HVAC unit will appreciate it too. Things are getting a little dry here; if it were summer I would be more concerned about that.

Forecast called for a high of 43. It’s already 42 an hour before solar noon. Looks like a good overperformer. Next few sunny days will probably do the same so think next wedensday if nothing changes we get 65-68 to finish off jan

Same here. I need to thaw out my heat pump anyway!

I don't know how the January ranks, but I can remember a lot of cold spells, but usually we get a longer warm up between cold shots. Already, Birmingham, at the airport, (which is the warmest place around here ;))
20 out of 24 days with lows below freezing.
13 days in the twenties
5days in the teens
1 day in single digits
Amazing January!

Let's not get carried away with the Pluses. :p I mean, unless we're grading on a curve. A+ gotta be at least 6"!
I'd say we've become jaded. If we look at 30 year averages for a particular area; let's say it averages 40 degrees and 1.3in of snow for the month of Jan. We're to the point where many are willing to give it a B or even an A; but really being average should be a C. To me; over the course of winter; I would need to be consistently well below normal temps with well above average snowfall to grade it an A. Yeah, it's been a long time.

Coldest January since 2014
3" total of snow/sleet

Gonna have to give this an A+
I was just thinking about this on my drive to kids drop off. I was teetering between an B+ and an A- there is something so nice about a sustained cold stretch. Helps to reset nature. Would have liked a little more snow and maybe a single digit reading to get it it A+ territory.

Something that doesn't happen often...going an entire calendar month without hitting 60. Locally that's only happened 8 times since 1879 (2x in December, and 6x in January). The most recent month to stay below 60 from start to finish here was December 2000, It's been a minute lol. 50/50 chance we hit 60 next week but we'll see.

Average wise, CHA is probably gonna finish between 25th coldest and 30th coldest, so, cold but not THAT cold...comparable to 2003, 2010, and 2018. The extremes for the month are near climo...pretty typical for an average January with 5 lows in the teens, and 2 highs below freezing. For me, it's the lack of any warm periods giving January 2025 a lasting impression.

Thanks y’all for discussing this whole HVAC thing. It reminded me to change my air filter. My home is electric heat wishing it was natural gas. Nothing beats nat gas heat.

NTL .. I literally just changed my air filter and it was completely clogged. I have two dogs and sometimes lose site of how often its necessary. Suddenly, my HVAC is more quiet. PLEASE change your filter !!

Afraid to see my Duke Energy bill. Normally it’s under $100 even though I run my heat at 66. we’ll see ?

My home is a slab single story brick ranch only 1.800 sq ft. 1993

The average max for KAGS this month has been 49.7 and minimum has been 27.2 so far.

I expect for this to tick up some but it has absolutely matched January 2014 pound for pound (actually exceeded it I think), I checked January 2018 and I’d say this has exceeded that year.

Definitely down for a warm up, honestly would be fine with an average-ish February to be honest instead of being put in the torch box or spending more time in the ice box.

18 this morning. I'll probably be impressed for a few years at how easily we were teens in this pattern seemingly morning after morning this month

Completely agree, this is my 5th night this week in the teens and one in the single digits. That is about as long a run as I can remember for my area.
