Tropical Hurricane Sally

That’s potentially a pretty ominous track for NOLA, isn’t it? Seems like winds would blow surge towards NOLA from over Lake Ponchatrain. If it doesn’t strengthen past a cat 1, that probably won’t be a big deal, but if it strengthens more than forecasted it could be a big problem.

Gonna be very small so not as much surge.

What’s this gonna be named? I can’t keep up!

No storm on record apparently has ever hit Florida as a TD then became a major in the Gulf

But it is 2020...

What’s the record for number of TCs in the Atlantic basin at the same time?

Ion see much talk about the Storm surge but this thing could have some damaging surge given a storm that’s slowing down, strengthening certainly doesn’t help, but slow movement could create some major storm surge

Pretty good structure on IR ATM. Starting to see convection growing over the center.

Edit: Looking at visible, it isn’t as good as it looked on IR. Looks like LLC and MLC still aren’t stacked.

If this storm is headed close to New Orleans, this is about the worst angle of approach for them. The wind will come in a direction that pushes a surge up the river from the Gulf and from the lake down into the city.

Could we be looking at a repeat of Katrina ? Is there any chance this storm makes landfall as a Cat 3 like Katrina did ?

A Hurricane Watch is in effect from Grand Isle Louisiana to the
Alabama/Florida border, including Lake Pontchartrain, Lake
Maurepas, and metropolitan New Orleans.

Not a hurricane expert by any stretch but in my layman opinion, no way. Katrina was a CAT3 at landfall but with a CAT 5 tidal surge. Comparing this to Katrina would be hyperbole in my opinion.

And a long / straight track. Really bakes the surge in.
