Misc General Banter Thread

Question for y'all in SC that will show that I'm still beaming a bit from going to the lowcountry, though I'm probably not going to go all the way back to Charleston/Edisto.

How do you feel about DIY tubing? Is it possible to find an area in Givhans Ferry State Park where you can do good tubing runs that aren't a full hour or is just going with the tubing service a better idea?

Secondary and close to an hour closer too... is DIY possible in Columbia in the Congaree/Saluda River?

I don't have a tube, but if doing it DIY style is realistically possible in one of these rivers, I might go get one (and if it's a waste of money, I'll wave off my parents and attempt a full short run with one of the tubing services without them coming along). And sadly, tubing in the Savannah River is really not recommended if you're curious.

This idea somehow has now turned into something completely different btw. We're probably still going to Saluda Shoals, but my dad has talked me out of tubing as he doesn't want to be away from my wheelchair bound mom for 2 hours. We might get in the river or go to Lake Murray though, and I kind of baited my dad into another return trip to the Congaree but that will be much later.

I recently before this went to Columbia on my own for the first time in 7 years to go to the zoo ha (first time since I was very little there). It was the second time in quite a while that I did a long distance drive and while my little Civic handled well (too well as I struggled to get down to a lower speed limit when I got to the Columbia limits), my back tightened up and that concerns me as I still have the idea that I am going to put myself behind the wheel for a longer trip in a few weeks.

The rain is coming down hard in Cary right now where I work. I'm hoping my residence will get the same treatment. There maybe more to come later. After today, things look to dry up again for the next seven days outside of an isolated shower or thunderstorm. I think the chances are good that my residence has now broken the one inch mark for June as far as rainfall at least.

Exactly why I decided that I'm going to attempt to travel to SW NC, though the plans didn't evolve to July until I talked through them.

For now, I'm headed north through the South Carolina route as I have the idea of going tubing. I've liked what I've seen of Columbia, but if I ever left my nerves in the dust, I really, really should have the upstate on my list of places to move to.

Upstate isn’t so bad. 2-3hrs from the beach and 45mins from the mountains. 90’ish minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway. We really don’t know how good we’ve got it here

You may need a lumbar pillow or a towel rolled up. Hondas have horrific seating ergonomics and the Civic doesn't come with adjustable lumbar support even on the fancy Touring model.

Saw this joker as I was taking a dog walk before going back home today. Been helping mom move to a new place about a mile inland around Ocean Isle/Calabash past few days. That means more freshwater around apparently. Previously was near the Intracoastal. Never saw one of these on the road in 10 years of visiting there.

Yea it’s not a close pic, but as I said I was on a dog walk and didn’t wanna test the circle of life.

Well we're gonna have to hunker down; looks like the heat is truly coming. I hate what's showing up but nothing can be done. Get me to mid August and I can see the end coming; earlier sunsets, lower sun angle, and signs of change. What's coming is no fun.

I've been telling people for weeks who are mad it hasn't been truly hot yet out here just wait. Yes it's probably rained too much for some people but it always shuts off at some point and we see the forecasts

But I mean who can forget the whole Christmas week was in the 70s and 80s anyway... Like I truly hope to never see that again here. I don't think people realize when they complain about wheres the heat now that we broke every record in the books back then

Speaking of... 6 months til Christmas Eve again

Upstate/SC (possible NC?) peeps, I have a serious question for y'all (yes, I have too much time on my hands at work lol).

If you have very little mountain driving experience, how is the drive on US 178 from Pickens, SC to Rosman, NC? I thought it might not be too bad, but I looked at streetview this morning and am having some second thoughts lol.

I will note that despite my low experience, the following roads do not scare me lol, if I'm driving, I'd be more concerned about my back...

SC to NC 107

SC 130 to NC 281

US 64 around Sapphire/Cashiers, NC.

I’ve only driven 64 around Cashiers. Did you drive any west from Cashiers towards Highlands? If so, I think you’ll be fine cause it’s pretty curvy and hilly and likely equivalent to your route. East of Cashiers to Sapphire is a little more tame if I recall. Otherwise, I’ll defer to those who know the area more.

Everybody’s different, but I’ve never minded mountain driving even though I do it rarely. Much rather do that than drive on a SoCal highway, that’s for sure.

Since Sports thread still 🔒, I'll post here. LaMelo trade??? Wow. (!!!!)
That was a move that came out of left field. Charlotte did pick up one of the better sixth men in the NBA in Naz Reed and plenty of draft capital for future years but trading Ball, who had really gelled well with his teammates and was partly responsible for the breakout rookie year that Knueppel had via his ball distribution skills is questionable. I did just see where the Hornets resigned Coby White and with the guard that they selected with their second pick they must feel like that the point guard position is in good hands even without LaMelo Ball.

Oh, if I don’t wimp out, this is actually going to be the first time I’ve driven windy roads in over a decade, and what I did wasn’t too bad then.

It’s just that I’ve visualized the other roads and they weren’t too bad and honestly what I saw this morning reminded me of when I sent my dad on US 19/129 last summer by mistake through Vogel State Park in Georgia on the way home. It was not a fun ride (after we managed to pick out routes on the way up that led to a gentle ride by choosing to head to Athens and then turn on Google Maps directions) and dad was pissed.

(He is not going for this deal, this is an idea that came to my mind when I thought about areas I could possibly reach if I’m allowed over an hour on a trail, and then thought about how it wouldn’t be great to be in a no/limited service area by yourself, so I recruited at least one other person to come but it may be two and man I’m probably going to learn how out of shape I truly am)

Very out of left field. Probably a great long term move, but I wonder short term cause the team finally had some momentum..

That 2033 unprotected 1st round pick looks great (along with the other draft picks), but I wish it wasn't 7 years from now. 🤣

If anybody needs a house in Fuquay, this one is available! It’s my sisters in-laws house. They passed away and she has been getting it ready for market and cleaning , yadda for 6 months! Went live yesterdayIMG_5871.png

Might as well drink my Blantons and Eagle Rare while I watch the sunset and my yard dry out

I'm in better shape than a good bit of NC drought wise (I hope that gets fixed a little soon with me heading to waterfall country?), but I have to say, I haven't been a fan of the pop ups lately (this and last year).

They just seem to miss my house. A small one found me at a bank branch today though, and while my brain was short circuiting as I was writing out what I wanted, it was apparently pouring outside for a short period.

Happy you got some. We’ve had a few popups, or pulse storms but they sit stationary and never get to mby.

We supposedly had a good chance of widespread storms today. LOL. Hard to believe it's about to be JULY and locally we've received less than 9" of total precipitation.
