Gene Shalit died at 100!

NEW YORK (AP) — Gene Shalit, a movie critic and arts reporter for the “Today” show over four decades who was known for his puffy hair, oversized handlebar mustache and affection for groan-inducing puns, has died. He was 100.

Shalit’s family announced the death Friday to NBC News, saying in a statement that he “passed away peacefully today after 100 years of an amazing life.”

Shalit joined “Today” as a contributor in 1970 and became arts editor in 1973, later settling in for his segment, “Critic’s Corner.” When he left the show in 2010, he was one of the last high-profile film critics on a major network.

“What resonated above his unusual appearance was his incredible wit, his remarkable intelligence. But he didn’t pound you over the head with it. He amused you. He enlightened and amused whatever subject he was on,” Guy Ludwig, Shalit’s producer for more than 20 years, wrote in an essay at the time of Shalit’s retirement.

It was no coincidence that Chicago critics Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel’s local “thumbs-up, thumbs-down” movie-review program, “Sneak Previews,” went national on PBS in the late 1970s and that “Today” show’s ABC rival, “Good Morning America,” hired Joel Siegel to be its movie critic in 1981.

“Shalit was instrumental in changing the balance of critical power in America. When he began his ‘Today’ tenure, newspapers and magazines were the primary sources for movie reviews. That’s where cinematic opinion was sparked and shaped,” The Plain Dealer wrote in 2010, calling Shalit “Daniel Boone in a bow tie and Groucho glasses.”

It's interesting people are sick of the rain here. Go figure

It's gonna shut off soon I'm sure but the difference is crazy

It's understandable. Locally we've had less than 1/3 our normal rainfall since 9/1/2025 so everyone is getting irritable from dust and sunshine.

Usually between around March and October I usually don’t check in here much. But I have to say I’m ready to get back in here and track some winter storms. What do the way too early forecasts look like?

Last super El Nino sucked here(which seems to be the way we're headed) but I find it hard to believe we can have a record torch two years in a row...

I guess we will find out

The one thing is it's usually wetter it seems even if it's not cold enough

Bad news everyone. Effective July 1st, me and my family will be moving elsewhere. Why? Landlord is selling house and evicting us.
Since you will be living near Benson, you have to check out Mule Days which is always celebrated on the last weekend of September every year. There are plenty of family friendly activities and events to enjoy. Back in my younger years when I was living life on the wild side, Mule Days was something me and my friends always went to. With the kids cruising Benson, which was a every weekend event and Mule Days in town, it created some of the biggest small town traffic jams and insane street parties you have ever seen if you were interested in that kind of thing. That was about forty years ago and cruising is no longer allowed in Benson so things are probably tamer these days which is good. If I had some time, I could tell some crazy stories about some of the things I saw there.

I hate PTC's and so does everyone else I know

That is all

At least they don't count towards the seasonal numbers

6z ICON shifted south with the tropical moisture feed/track. Day 5 QPF totals:

NWS also starting to back off some on grid precip coverage for many in NC.

I'm surprised a lot of NC into Va isn't burning from huge wildfires. I guess we haven't had rogue lightning strikes.

Waiting on the euro but the gfs has dried up here significantly until the end of the run as usual! Congrats to the panhandle of FL!

What a fun day for me lol 😅.

I got my appt date wrong, so it ended up meaning I had to drive from my work through I-20 into Columbia County, and the heaviest rain set up around I-20 and north around Evans today in the morning.

That drive was absolutely NOT comfortable at all. I got through it, which is why I'm posting this, but woo wei.

Then SC boys getting it done!!! That’s a monster flathead! Biggest one I’ve ever seen a picture of!! Not AI! I’ve seen this posted a few times the past week! 💪 IMG_5831.png

Welp, it didn't happen. The house required somebody that was temporary until their family member croaks and moves in next door to them. Oh well, but we are still moving out of the area.

This cutout might be the most epic thing View attachment 196460
That’s an interesting marginal/slight risk line. “Hey intern, draw a line from SC that leaves out the sandhills but includes Raleigh. No no, Rockingham needs to be in the slight. There ya go, approved”.

No I don’t think that’s what happened, but lol.

We had fropa and suddenly 2 weeks before the 4th of July weekend we are cooler than most of the winter and spring has been. Go figure

We lose a second of daylight on Sunday for the first time

It still looks pretty unsettled for at least the next week or so at least
