Misc General Banter Thread

Ok the headline says it could feel like 110. That would mean actual temps would probably be well over 100. Is any part of Alaska really going to be that hot ?
Reading the article and there is this bit "With nearly 22 hours of sunlight approaching the solstice, daytime heat accumulates and lingers — not just outside, but indoors. Unlike the Lower 48, most homes in Alaska weren’t built to keep heat out, but to keep it in during months of subzero cold. The thick insulation this requires turns houses into ovens during extended periods of hot temperatures." Makes sense I suppose.

I bet a lot of homes don't have AC up there either

It's different down here. I've been up north before with places that had no AC

I really hate June. But at least we are 8 days from the solstice and after that the days get shorter and sun slowly gets less intense.
Yep usually notice the grass slows down that first week of August. By the end of the month it's still hot but not burning you up just going outside from the slightly lower sun angle. Seems to be a 50/50 shot depending on the year whether we get an early front in August to knock the humidity back a day or two.

I'm ready for fall, football, and then chasing snow storms. Completely over summer already.

This... We haven't even been that hot yet but between the endless humidity and the fact there's daylight til 930pm right now(why???) yeah I'm ready for fall
Couldn't agree more. The older I get the less I like summer weather. 60s and 70s are fine but this heat and humidity is for the birds... and we're just getting started 😣

I truly hope one day we go back to standard time in summer. Yes some people will complain but they complain about everything. Outdoor dining is basically a no-go here unless you're on the beach in June-July-August. Having it cool off an hour earlier in the evenings (it'll still be light at 730) would be a boon for summertime evening activities.

Yeah I just noticed most of Mexico got rid of it in 2022 🤔 its spreading. China is on standard time and they've survived and a lot of their country is further north than us 😂

Like I said before people arent going to DST anymore. If anything standard time is taking over. And I bet if the US ever ditches it everyone else that is left will

It's pretty much down to us and EuropeDST_Countries_Map (1).png

attic getting 80 y/o insulation removed today and airsealed. tomorrow getting cellulose blown in. really excited, hope it makes a difference
was completely unprepared for how much of a difference this made. it's as if my ceiling was a gaping hole exposed to the elements before this

played golf until 8:30 last two nights, could not disagree more

how much does something like this cost if you don't mind me asking? I just moved into a 1150sq ft home a few months ago and need to upgrade my insulation because I feel like I have the same problem. But I'm also penny pinching at the moment. . . so trying to see what I can afford to do haha

I guess dewpoints in the low to mid 40s will help a little. 87 with a dp of 42 is a lot easier to handle than 87 with a dp of 70.
Going to have temps in the 94-98 degree range this weekend here. DP of 70+
Gonna feel like upwards of 110 degrees Saturday and Sunday! Looking forward to that! 🥵

It's funny with the "sunshine" acts being passed in various state legislatures. Every single place that's tried year-round DST has gone back on it in very short order. We did in the 70s, hell even the Russians said no thanks after a few years. It's an unfortunate fact that our time zones are as much political as they are geographic. We would all benefit economically, medically, socially, you name it with year round Standard Time. Studies have shown this for decades now.

I was in Atlanta when this was a news topic in November last year and can't possibly understand how folks over there would want DST in winter. I'm not even sure they understand/believe it would be pitch black dark until 830am for 2 months of the year and still too dark to do anything outside at 6:30pm because of the low sun angle. Throw in a cloudy, rainy December morning and it would be DARK as late as 9am. Absolute madness.

I don't think it's political at all. Sure, if you don't do anything outside, I can understand why year round standard time wouldn't matter. However for someone like myself who leaves the house at 6am and gets home after 5:30pm, it certainly would nice to have at least some daylight at home in the winter months when the weather outside is cool and not sweltering.

There is going to be some hot air in place with that strong high pressure in place overhead. While not as bad as the Euro's eight to nine days of 100 degree heat the GFS has plenty of misery to deal for those who don't like extreme heat.

Gonna be shocked if we get anywhere close to 100 across AL. Soil moisture is incredible.

In case y’all don’t know the details, the 1974 experiment to try year-round DST in the US was a disaster due to children being killed going to school due to darkness. It was supposed to be tried for two winters, but was stopped after the first winter and that was that.

They couldn’t adjust the school hours so that kids wouldn’t be going to school in the dark ?

Yeah I've read stories about the 70s it's crazy but back then you had places with a sunrise at almost 10am in the middle of winter just to have an extra hour in the evening! Ridiculous

It'll never last even if they try it and like I said the clear trend worldwide is away from it anyway

Probably a much different result in today's age. The amount of kids riding the busses are way down and many I see on the way to work are getting on in the dark anywho.

Just leave it the way it is.

Lol yeah I dont think it will ever change tbh. For some reason it's a super polarizing issue and nobody can agree. In some ways I do see why we switch because if we stay on standard time it would be light at 430am right now which is almost worse than the 930 light right now lol. By switching it keeps the times from getting too ridiculous I guess

Of course JQ public on Facebook thought it ended years ago everytime it comes around🙄 but thats another story

So is the robot euro the best model and did i miss the hurricane the gfs had for the last month?

The GFS has been awful with its numerous fake Hs over the last month or so.
The Euro AI leaves a lot to be desired in general and still has a lot to learn from what I’ve seen.

Time *zones* are political, ergo DST. What I mean by that is the way we have time zones set up only somewhat reflects where they actually should be based on geography. If we aligned them as they should be it would cause all sorts of headaches with more metro areas being split among other issues.
