Wintry Feb. 19-20

You’re joking right? It did awful from atl to Charlotte. Euro/aifs did great and were much closer to reality and the 3km nam eventually came around to what they had been showing for days minus how awful it did where I mentioned.
Relax...I am showing the precip that verified v/s what the 3km had. From a 1000 ft view it did fairly well. This is in respect to the CAMs...the HRRR was horrific and really shouldn't be used outside of hour 6.

Only spot I see where the 3km NAM did better was predicting that little minima around Georgetown, SC.

3km NAM was definitely better than anything the Hrrr or Rap spit out in the 0-24hr range though for sure.

That ull saved me with that band that set up over the southern end of Rutherford county this morning. We usually all the time miss those to the east. I got to see snow fall most of the day yesterday and flurries on and off throughout the night and got a quick 0.5 this morning so I call it a win as my expectations have been lowered since I haven't gotten older and we don't see what we used to in the winter weather department around here like it was in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s so I'll take it. Even 2.0 on the season in the nc southern foothills.

Per NWS;
GSP got .3 today; now at 1.1 for the year.
CLT got .2, now at 1.2
AVL only a trace both days; still just at 1.9 for the year.

Keep in mind; these are also the 3 year totals for each location. That is pretty remarkable.
Hard to believe brother it's that bad. That ull band saved me this morning. I usually always miss those to the east. Quick 0.5 in less than 2 hours. I have had to lower my expectations on winters around here now. It kills me but when I was younger I would really be all to hell about missing these storms. I just have to learn to live with what we get now and enjoy it and move on because I used to be miserable years ago when we missed out. Different times. Always hoping a return to the winters of old when next winter rolls around.

Just crazy here... 2 degrees this morning 16 for the high so far. We only had 2 inches of snow(which for here is nothing) and still there hasnt been a whole lot of melting in the yards... Like even with direct sun it's still a solid snow cover and it's been sunny all day here

This is nothing short of historic here. Like in January we had three times as much snow and it was mostly gone by now

Still got 90ish percent snowcover I’d wager but south facing hills are definitely cooked and mostly bare. Sad with clouds most of the day. Of interest, even shady streets that stayed frozen for days after the last two smaller snows are bare now, the warm weather coming into it definitely played a role there.

We drove 99 miles and in the last 100 yards someone slid down the hill and into my lane and tried to ruin my day.

Welcome to the show! ☃️

Dang man. I hate that. My kind of luck right there. All for the love of snow. I hit Avery county up all the time for my snow fix as well. Be safe up there brother. Enjoy the snow up there.!

Even though the clouds hung on for most of the afternoon we managed to make it to 34 degrees today. The main roads near my house were just wet for the most part but that will turn into ice with temperatures in the teens tonight. It looks like things will be melted enough for my wife's birthday on Saturday.

Was kind of interested/wondering why it almost seemed the snow was melting today as snow was falling. Even with similar temps and snow falling (and larger flakes than yesterday) there was a good bit more solar radiation today while snow was falling than yesterday afternoon.

Happened to look at rdu’s daily snowfall records, and turns out February 19 and 20 were the two weakest totals of the winter pretty much. Kind of makes you wonder if we were due to get this. Not sure what y’all’s official total was for today, but could have “fixed” a gap in the data for both days with this storm!

Well dang. That daily climate report says the record for today was 2.5" if I'm understanding. Must have happened since 2015, but it doesn't say the year. The data I had was 10 years old
Yea I noticed that too and you're correct. Turns out RDU got 2.5'' on Feb 20 2020. Yesterday's snow was the most since that one--almost 5 years to the day in fact.

Who measures some of this stuff ? I mean Goodlord they’re way off. Also, do you have to be an official for GSP to use your Report? I made the report one time “5 Miles West Of Salisbury Public” but they changed my amount and didn’t use what I told them ?

Edit : it’s also the dumbest thing to record records from These airports. It’s naturally gonna be warmer and get less. KCLT is one of the warmest places on the map anytime same as Concord Regional

Leaving from Greenville, there was some snow on the ground when we were coming up I-26 through Spartanburg then there was zero snow all the way up Hwy221 through Rutherfordton and into Little Switzerland. We finally started getting snow flurries around LS and it picked up as we went through Ashford. Snow accumulation and rates really picked up between Linville and Grandfather. Then when we came up Grouse Moor Dr and got above 5k feet on top of sugar m the snow was relentless. There are 2-3ft drifts up here. Windchill values peaking around -15 under the stronger gusts.

I can’t take much more.

By the way Ashford was unrecognizable. The damage from Helene is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. River has been widened by 50-100 yards on both sides. There are canyons carved into the sides on the mountains. 100 foot swaths carved down the sides of the mountain from top to bottom in all directions from mudslides. Seeing it will take your breath away. And to think chimney rock was worse. I just can’t imagine
