Wintry December 23-26 2022 Winter Weather and Cold

It's 11 at 2:15 pm with a wind-chill of 1. I keep stepping outside momentarily and imagining myself in a Siberian gulag. Perhaps that's a better fait than what is soon to invade my humble abode...

-10 at the summit of Sugar Mountain currently. Banner Elk sitting at -1 with a forecast low of -5. 1989 holds the record on this date and they hit -18 on the thermometer the very next night! Any of you old farts remember that outbreak?4048CBE8-A3E7-4B5E-A0B2-258A7B449C9D.jpeg

Wait 1989 makes you a old fart? I remember 89 well, hit below zero Christmas Eve night with deep snowpack.....in eastern NC.

Made it to 17.8F before it has started falling back off, down to 16.7F.
I’ve hovered at 18 all day after 12 earlier. Been awhile since we’ve had a day like this. It’s funny how much that little downslope from lookout warms me compared to those just west. I went out in my duck gear and worked on my kids play set and it was glorious.

Well only in the eastern part of the state if I recall correctly....

Also WTF happened to this.....why it link to nothing now....

That snowpack made a huge difference. We never got below the low teens back here from that cold snap. Wilmington got down to 0 that Sunday night because of the snow. Then the entire pattern changed and did not switch back. Rest of winter was warm and later very wet.

Sugar Mountain Live cam is looking raw. I went skiing up there in the late 2000’s with negative wind chills and it is not pleasant. Skiing with active frostbite warnings is not on my to do’s list again any time soon. We were spitting on the condo sliding glass door up at Oma’s meadow and it was freezing on contact.

Not really a cliff dive but a nice early winter's day nonetheless. Certainly better than a torch in the shorts.

Problem with the clipper is that it’s mid/upper level generated precip and our lower level dew points are insanely low. Just almost no chance it’ll have enough juice to saturate the column down to the surface. Mountains could do ok though since they’ll be above a big portion of the dry layer.

Just got back in from outside about 10 minutes ago and yep it's miserable outside haha.

Think we bottomed at 32 a couple hours after 7:30ish, then stayed nearly steady like I thought.

I'll likely need a coat tomorrow for my travels...or at least I hope that coat that I've barely touched doesn't have a bug issue.

18 for the morning low. 21 for the high. Back down to 19 with a stiff wind still blowing in right off that snowpack to my NW.
