You'll very rarely see a storm play out like the Canadian does that run. A low sitting around and even retrograding WNW for 24 hours or more. Models show that occasionally and are especially prone to showing it happening with lows retrograding across the Ohio Valley. They virtually always lose that look and become more progressive as you get closer to verification time. When they do happen though, you get events like the Great Appalachian Storm of 1950.

“A build-up of Arctic air over the Yukon and NW Territory of Canada will spill southeastward like a dam break over the Lower-48 next week. The leading edge of this Arctic air may develop a wave of low-pressure along it, providing snow Thursday into Friday of next week. How much snow depends on where the players align on the field--unknowable at this point. Temperatures become bitterly cold for the Christmas Holiday weekend. The bitter cold is a surer bet.”
