Misc Cold Season Complaining

True words spoken there. Just watching globally the last couple of years I've all but given up down here. It's getting very hard to ignore that these record warm sst's are greatly affecting patterns globally and making it nearly impossible to get a pattern that produces down here se of the Apps.

It's not the fact it hasn't snowed yet. It never really has in December. It's looking ahead and seeing the hole we're about to dig right after Christmas. We're almost guaranteed now to piss away the 1st 10 days of Jan, if not the whole 1st half. And Jan seems to be the only month capable of producing anymore considering Feb hasn't done anything in 10 years now. I'd say our chances of doing this snowless thing 3 years in a row now have gone up dramatically now. December went on that 10 year run of being above average, but that's not what's hurt us in the snowfall department. It's been losing Feb that's caused this. Feb was the snowiest month for most places in the SE.
 
I'm not normally negative but feels like we should punt to January already. These marginal cold (initially) shortwaves have to dive in the perfect way for many to score. Ridge out west has trended flatter and flatter. In terms of after the system we have been tracking, cold seems to disappear. Let me know when real cold comes back like the shot we had earlier this month.

I say this half jokingly, but sometimes I do think our seasons are getting out of whack.

For example, our Fall foliage down here in Columbia has been coming in waves of peak colors since like Late October. Our Oak trees are still colorful like it's Mid November. I have never seen the leaves hang around this long.... And we have had several hard freezes so far. It has been an incredibly weird Fall & I swear it seems like it all started with Hurricane Helene.
 
I still remember the first year I was here... 13 inches of snow after February 1st. Zero before it

A massive swath of the southeast had a 5-20 inch rain event with high winds to end september and then capped that with 2 months of practically no rain, the subseasonal changes have been very wonky this year

I think that had a ton to do with it if not all.

At least that's what the past 10 years has shown us. Pretty sure there hasn't been a big snow outside of elevation over here since 2015

Why? So we can be cold and dry again?
 
Slower afternoon at work & just farting around on Eric's site reminiscing.

I was thinking on the period between Christmas & New Years I trying to think back on any significant Winter storms in this period.. I couldn't think of anything. So I looked into it and sure enough, this is a historically dead period for Winter weather in the Carolinas..

I could really only find like a few notable events dating back through like the 60s during the period between the 27th & the 1st of January.

Absolutely. Like I said this morning it's not that it hasn't snowed yet. It's how bad it looks around New Years. All cold relative to average blasted off the continent, any snowpack probably gone in the US outside the Rockies. Seems like this year is just following the same ole boring crap as the last few. But maybe it's just PTSD from the last few winter. Man it's been bad, really bad
 
I really think there are folks that would rather live in a state like the old days where the models were way too pac ridge happy at D7+ only for it to trend into oblivion than in today's world where we don't get perpetual day 7-16 storms that never work

I think so too.

Busts are rare these days. Models are good.

I’d rather live in the old days where I got 1-2 winter storms each season and 3-4 additional close calls.

Instead I’ve had 0 close calls in 3 years.
 
For us Carolinians it’s nice to have sky cams where we can see the snow from places like Valdez Alaska or Buffalo NY right on our phones. This is becoming the new snow chase.

And, of course, Tarheel1 who frequently posts every flake he receives on here on his way to a foot total.

I'm planning a last minute trip to Aspen. I have to see actual snow!
 
The December Dud thread went off the rails like a crazy train, but at least we have cloud clusters and flurries to chase this winter. Silver lining with a touch of grey…
