Misc Cold Season Complaining

Ya'll want to hear something really annoying.

Think of how much of the Southern coastline received 3+ inches of snow this winter. From Texas all the way to the Florida panhandle, and from Tybee Island, GA up to Virginia beach/Delaware. all got at least 3 inches... and Wilmington, NC to Virginia Beach had multiple significant winter events.
I bet that hasn't happened in hundreds of years.

Stupid

Stupid gradient. Got 1 inch of mostly sleet and some snow. Almost 4" on the ground 10 miles NW of me. Most of the models weren't even close for MBY. RAP gave me 5", lol. HRRR gave me 2" and that was still too much.

Totals from all snow events this year.
0.8”
0.2”
0.4”
0.5”
1.0”
Season total - 2.9”
Average - 3.5”
This event moved winter from a D to a B for me. Makes a difference when everything is covered in an event for once. Not at average but close enough
Is your all’s average really that low? Just 3.5”? I had thought CLT’s 30-year average was over 4” and I would assume you’d be higher there?

This map will not change anymore this winter except up in the mountains. That little spot right in the middle SW of Charlotte is where I am. I think I have every right to be upset.
Most of us in that zone have a right to be frustrated with the skips this year and the past 3 years in general. I will point out that early Springs and 80s will make it awfully hard to fill in that zone.

It's over this year unless we somehow get a March 1993 repeat. Too much has to come together perfectly for good snow in Feb and March short of a superstorm like that one was.

I am shocked that after 2 days of sunshine on February 20th there is still no bare ground

We only had 2 inches barely it was pathetic 🤣 I'm just shocked

I better never hear about sun angle ever again. It ain't making a dang difference

Didn’t realize @Birdmandoom lived here in Mooresville … I’d congratulate you on your successful forecast of the ULL but I don’t wanna disturb your dinner

It makes a big difference, believe me. Bare grass I see outside tells the tale. But you’ve had highs in the mid teens which makes it pretty inconsequential. As a kid, I remember we had a day with full sunshine and temps in the mid 20s and I thought the sun wouldn’t melt it and then it did and I was so sad. I think this might’ve been the January 2003 ULL so it was super high ratio fluff that melted even easier.

Iv been thinking about it for a while and I think I am going to probably deactivate my account on here soon or cut way back. Whether you like me or not I’m still a snow weenie at heart and I can’t keep doing this year in and out. We are starting year 4 of no significant snow in my area and it hurts even worse to see how close we are sometimes. I think I would just rather not know like I did as a kid. And this next year definitely doesn’t seem like it’s gonna be good for snow so we could very well be going on year 5 soon. Sure it’s a blast when you finally reel one in but those are becoming few and far between. Also on another note, I have little kids and I spend way too much time checking in on here every model run when I should be spending the time with them.

It’s only a couple months out of the year on a GOOD year that we even get to sniff the opportunity to do this. Although it is very time consuming at times. There will be times you are more passionate about it than others. Every year is not the same. Ebbs and flows. This has been one of those exceptional years where we had a lot of things going on so it ate up a lot of time and for several locations it all seemed to be in vain. It’s tough. You’ll have that on them big jobs. We will 100% get another good snow here in due time.

I can honestly relate to this. I decided earlier this year I couldn't continue doing the 200hr roller coaster ride any more. Too many crash and burns and too much time just in general spent.

I'm a professional meteorologist and know better but at heart I'm the biggest snow weenie on here - I guarantee it. Y'all look at how many posts I used to make at 2:00 am right there with Fro haha. There's been quite a few times where I only got a few hours of sleep for 7-10 days straight - not healthy and not sustainable. But I decided to stop that silly nonsense of tracking systems from so far out that are for sure not going to look the way they do at 200 hours out and it helped a lot. There was enough roller coaster ups and downs with this last system from around D6-7, but it was a lot better than tracking it for two weeks straight.

With littles, you already know it, but those memories made when it finally works out is so worth it and it'll happen again soon for you. Now that the dam is bursting, hopefully these upcoming winters are going to be a lot more fruitful than what we've had to deal with in the past. Winter just proved it can snow big time to the south of us and the east of us, so it can certainly snow on us and it will again.

It's still kind of ironic to me that for all the hype and model runs this winter the best storm here happened out of nowhere 🤣 actually we had a dusting 2 weeks later the same way... I was sitting here not even looking at anything and it had already snowed enough to cover the cars

Yeah I've spent way too much time looking 200 hours out too when it was right there in front of us. I totally get it. I'm bad about hurricane season too and the thing about hurricanes is they almost never do anything here other than make us more hot 🤣

And remember the last two winters we couldn't get more than an inch at once

A couple of thoughts here, because it represents a broader point. It's never a healthy or good idea to allow one thing to dominate your life so that your mental and physical health is dependent upon the outcome of something that is not within your control (Im not saying youre doing that - just making a point).

I would put my love of snow and cold and winter up against anyone on this board. But whether it snows or not can't dictate how I proceed through life. Part of the fun (and I would argue the VALUE) of this place is that we get to come together around something that is meaningful to all of us. We can all share in that. And through the sharing, we can build relationships, and even friendships.

At the end of the day, in the realm of life, that is more important. Just something to consider before you step back.

Also, regarding next winter, almost nobody was saying this winter was going to be worth 2 cents. The weather is still surprising and mysterious, and seasonal forecasting is still in it's adolescence. And weather is still fun and interesting.

Just something to think about.

Yeah this is one thing about 2024 I really hated.. I got angry about snow. It dominated way more thoughts than I want to admit the whole year(heck even when it was 100 degrees out and we had no hope). I never imagined it could bring out literal anger in me. I mean I had so many times when I thought about moving somewhere else and thought there was literally something wrong with us

Why did I get like that though? Especially here where tbh unless it really snows it's not the same thing. We don't just shut down at the mention of a flurry here. Honestly this storm even the cold is way worse than the snow is

But I mean the whole reason I went to Breckenridge and Kansas City is because of that directly... A direct result of me being angry. I gotta work on that this year

I mean look what happened... All our snow has been since I went to Kansas City

Arctic Haze in late February. Elevation of about 5200 feet here where we are staying. After the wreck earlier we had to get towed 25 feet to a parking area then make two half mile hikes bringing the stuff from our car to the rental condo. After the first trip without my gloves (idiot) my finger tips were in so much pain I was convinced I had frost nip. They still hurt. I layered up for the second 1mile round trip to the car and back to get the rest of our stuff. High of 30 tomorrow should feel nice.

While I Respect and admire Yours as well as Stevo’s decision and Wish I could …. I say this every time, I’m done I won’t do this again. But if I log in Tomm and Fro or Burrell or Kylo are fired up about something I’m gonna be glued like a child till the suns out again. It’s insanity sure, but I will never stop loving the chase more than the storm. The last week with all yall was more fun than the 1.8” of snow. Hell, if anything that’s depressing bc now idk what to do with my time. It’s unhealthy but the only thing that gives me adrenaline rush like a good Clown map is Having 3/4 margaritas and Gambling/ Sweating a Ballgame. Neither are prolly gonna allow me to live past 2050

Question for y’all… I’m pretty new to this world and I’m just wondering historically, what’s the latest y’all have seen a storm *appear* on the models at all? I keep reading y’all hating on watching these storms that are 7+ days out, but like, have we had storms that *weren’t* called out by any model runs 7 days out? Or 5 days out?
