Misc Cold Season Complaining

But you’re talking about a community who would expect more than just a map with reflectivity. Ain’t no way one could cobble together something on par with RadarScope without a lot of effort and money.

And it’s more than just an app. It’s the backend stuff too. The server side of things. Storage costs. Having reliable live streams. Sounded like you were going down an almost periscope sounding thing.

So basically periscope, Snapchat, Twitter-ish, YouTube, Radarscope, and Pivotal. And this forum. Anyone of which is a challenge.

I’d love to see it happen, but the effort involved is kinda big. However, AI could make some of these tasks a little easier. But AI is pretty far still from doing anything close to a working full solution.

Definitely not trying to discourage. Just pointing out that that prototyping and having ideas is the easy part.

Agreed. It feels insurmountable but I guess the vision comes first and like most things they cost money bring to life. Which is the main hurdle 99/100 with anything worth doing.

Time and money. And a lot of both. Plus the added complications of folks monetizing their streams.

That said, huge changes are happening now. AI is now making small teams capable of things that took far more resources before. There likely will be a point where parts of it aren’t so insurmountable. But that will also come with new challenges and shifts in what folks use and their expectations.

Keep dreaming though. It’s the only way cool things ever come to life.

You learn over time living in the upstate that you’ve gotta get in the car and drive. It’s never far from here which is what’s nice about living in this area.
 
I already said it in the storm thread, but the Canadian putting out great runs like that is 110% putting OTS for Middle Atlantic/NE weenies on the table lmao.

EDIT: Although based on the crude maps, it looks like the UKMET is bombing out in the NE, so maybe I shouldn’t poke fun.
 
We run into the issue of the majority of our traffic being repeat visitors. Ad networks hate repeat visitors. So while our traffic looks impressive, it's generally the same exact people so ad saturation kills the value.

To launch any kind of custom applications and modeling, we would have to invest a lot of money, resources, and time into something that doesn't even have 2,000 unique members.

It's going to be like a boat; A bottomless money pit for little to no return in the grand scheme of things. I really wish people understood just how much resources and time things cost. Just to get started, we are looking at $75,000-100,000 USD. The odds of finding investors are low, and when we start opening that can of worms, the forum that everyone comes to is dead.

It's all completely unpaid. The staff here are making $0 into their bank accounts. That is not sustainable to build a company off of.

No way could find VC to build. And the expected feature set is too great. And centralizing access to models and the costs that come with that.

Wish it were otherwise, but ya can’t just make an “app for that” like you used to.

Still, it would be cool to have something like it.

I encourage everyone to never think anything is impossible. You have a dream and the passion that could drive the tenacity to will it into reality, pull that thread. If it looks insurmountable today, come back and pull it later.

Looking like I'm going to be spending sunny Monday and Tuesday gassing up chainsaws and making sure they're running and sharp.
Then I'll be checking the generator and propane. This looks like it's heading towards some big impacts for some large areas.
Now's the time to get prepared. After is too late.
Oh, don't forget the milk and bread.

If you want to know when ya could pull that thread. Start using AI. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, etc.

Give it your idea and ask questions. And no, you don’t need to hesitate cuz you think it collects data and will steal your idea. Don't fear this stuff. That is the surest way to losing your job or missing out on another cool opportunity like the golden age of indie devs. AI is here, and it’s going nowhere. Ya just gotta get comfortable using and evolve with it.

I use it all the time to “do my homework”. In the last year, my productivity has gone way up! From naming things (the hardest part of doing software development) to a figuring out a good design pattern for a complex feature. Or just tedious boiler plate code. It’s amazing.

And for all y'all not in tech, it’s fantastic for bouncing ideas off. For anything. Even weather setups. Obviously there are issues with giving bad info, but I’ve found it gets you close enough. And if you just get good at prompting, you can challenge it and get better answers.
 
Came back from Tennessee tonight through I-81 and I-77. This I-40 closure is a PIA.
There were a crapload of power trucks still up there in VA from last Tuesday. Passed a long convoy of power trucks headed south on I-77 near Elkin. Those guys have been working their butts off between Helene and winter season.
I really respect them and appreciate what they do to get things done when the power needs to get back on.

I know I should be happy with the 2 hits we’ve gotten already but I was really hoping for just one more ATL hit this winter. It’s not looking like Feb will pan out for us though unless something changes drastically soon.

Hope at least the NC folks who got missed last time around get theirs!

AI has me writing good assembly language these days. It's a good tool to use.

too bad i fried my old keyboard's memory when doing the wrong thing with it though.

also, i am not worried about it stealing my data since I run the models offline at a local level.

That will be the name of the game next year for us as well, God willing. I’m gonna put my kids in the direct path of a monster blizzard.

I wonder if if the old Express 3500 would make a good tornado chasing vehicle….
 
Well for us here in north Alabama looks like we lost our chance at this one not that we had a big one anyway.oh well I’ll hope for a colder trend over the next few days
 
If you can get temps several degrees below freezing that will definitely help to counteract the sun angle, especially if this is a daytime event.
 
I’ve never seen something more wishcast weenie angry in my life…. Yea let’s discount it bc it Whiffs your area. Ohhh no Not the Elitist of Winter Wx the Mass weenies. We don’t even discount models that show the same thing for days (General Idea) Anyway…. One more run or two like that, it will be pure comedy to watch those cats cry up there

Realistically I do know that I'll probably just have more cold rain next week since we can't seem to get a CAD bust, but I will be keeping an eye on it anyway and if I don't lose interest, might look for pics/a stream maybe?

I was semi joking in my head when I was thinking in January "the next real threat will be around President's Day."
