Misc Cold Season Complaining

My daffodils finally broke through the ground and are up about an inch. They look rough too. Winter weeds are finally going too.
Everything is really dormant right now. Poor centipede really took a beating. daffodils are way behind schedule. Let me check to see if the swamp maples are turning red...

Means derechos and mega wind bag storm setups with high T thunderstorm fuel
Exactly. For my area it means strong downdraft winds as the storms decay to my west. Everyone says “it’s coming up a storm”, and I’m like no it’s dying. People get fooled by the clouds and wind but in the end, no rain

The thing that I've generally found with springs in this period that has mostly sucked for SE winter weather is that you have CAD pop up when you really don't need it in March and April.

So, you might still end up with above average temps, but you get several days that can give many seasonal SAD.

SSW's have entered the discussion. Winter is officially over.

Pitiful little showers tonight don't look like enough to get me to 2" of liquid precip for the month. No idea how much water content was in the snow but it couldn't have been much. More of it evaporated than melted I feel like. My grand total is 4.55" since 10/1/24.

I just can't believe we haven't had anything resembling a soaking rain since Helene. No thunder, no puddles in the yard, nothing. Just light showers here and there for 4 months. Farmers are plowing up dust and the wheat crop looks horrific. We're in deep doo-doo with this 10 day or so warm up if it's really going to be 70+ every day.

Can't wait for the wedge around here on Sunday. Mid 40s is going to feel great. I've had enough of this warm crap already. I sure as hell don't want spring in February again but that seems to be the theme with February's of late but I'll deal with it like I have had to the last 42 years around here. I think we might get something going around mid-month or after.

Well you could live in Aomori Japan, they average 312 inches of snowfall per year
And if you want a bigger metropolis, Sapporo isn’t far away and averages close to 200” of snow per year with a population of 2 million. 😍

The best part is that neither city is particularly cold, either, with January highs around freezing.

I guess these cities are some of the most “vulnerable” to global warming cutting snowfall totals extensively since a few degrees warmer in January would result in a lot more rain than they currently get, and less snow, I would think? Although they still average over two feet of snow in March with average highs around 40, so who knows. 🤷‍♂️

Eh maybe but go read about 1985. Those were 200+ people too

We've been on a lucky stretch too long
1996 had two major plane crashes in a few months with around 400 combined fatalities, as well. We also had a major plane crash that killed 265 in November 2001, just a couple months after 9/11. I think people forget how much planes used to crash. It’s one of the most impressive things how much safer flying is nowadays.

We are now at over 20 years since the last “major” US airline crash (i.e. not a mainline carrier). Unfortunately, we’ve had two regional jet crashes since then (Buffalo in 2009 and now the crash the other day).

Yup I love flying. Honestly the worst part to me is the security and the long waits sometimes at the gate. When you actually take off it can't be beaten. People don't realize how much training and watching pilots and ATC get(I was reading something the other night about it takes 10 years to become an ATC! And most people can't handle it or get tired of waiting to follow through) and how much the planes are scrutinized now. Yeah there have been slip ups but look at the sheer number of flights. How many planes landed at Reagan airport totally fine Wednesday??? Our aviation safety can't be topped

The plane last night in Philly was from Mexico and the company had a history of a fatal crash before...

You're way more likely to die every time you get in a car

If the Carolinas and other areas do score in the period around Valentine's day I hope it will be a big snowstorm. The snowfall record for RDU on Feburary 14 is six inches recorded in 1913. That's a record that can be broken with a decent sized snowfall accumulation.
I wouldn’t get too excited.
GFS drops 40 inches in Cleveland

This tells me all I need to know. There’s no point in even checking in for Feb cause this is what it will be.
