Misc 2021-22 Fall/Winter Whamby Thread

When was the last time we had something like this that didn't go negative, sucked the SLP west and drench Raleigh with rain while the 85 corridor pounded snow for 18 hours. This really sucks to miss out on a big event for a large part of the area.

Probably more than we want to admit tbh I think 2019, 2015 did something similar with no snow

That's what I mean...that is so close to a massive storm system. That stupid string at the base of the trough screwed us. And probably that convection off the coast.

When we were looking at houses, I wanted the top climo I could get in the metro. 27712 provided that and proximity to campus and Durham.

I was not, under any circumstances, going to live anywhere near 40.

That’s what I did in Guilford County. It’s interesting what moving just 10 miles north can do for snow totals. It’s not just a minor latitude change either. Getting away from the sea of asphalt and concrete can mean a 2 or 3 degree temperature difference.

Februaries during La Niña have mostly sucked at RDU in recent years.

Feb 2021 - T
Feb 2018 - 0.0"
Feb 2017 - T
Feb 2012 - 0.9"
Feb 2011 - 0.4"
Feb 2009 - T
Feb 2008 - T
Feb 2006 - T
Feb 2002 - T
Feb 2001 - 0.3"
Feb 2000 - 0.0"
Feb 1999 - T
Feb 1996 - 8.1"

Yikes that's horrible. RDU hasn't even cracked an INCH in February during a La Niña since 1996!

What about March

Take last night. We raidated to 15 degrees, which was 4 degrees colder than Durham and six colder than RDU. We're surrounded mostly by woods, horse farms etc.

But dew point dan told me nobody cared if my property got more snow than 20 miles southeast of here.

In the recent past 1-2 decades yeah I bet the drop off is insane but I bet over the last 100-120 years it's not as dramatic. The lack of a -nao the last 7 years is killing SE wake
Yeah, there shouldn’t be a huge difference between RDU and Garner. It’s probably like 1”/year difference (if that) over the long term if I had to guess, which is barely noticeable. The last storm was probably the first one in a long time where it benefited to be S/E of RDU. Which shouldn’t be rare.

What about March
March is actually better

March 1996 - 0.9"
March 1999 - T
March 2000 - 0.0"
March 2001 - T
March 2002 - T
March 2006 - T
March 2008 - 0.0"
March 2009 - 3.2"
March 2011 - T
March 2012 - 0.0"
March 2017 - 0.3"
March 2018 - 1.6"
March 2021 - 0.0"

A bit better but most still had a trace or nothing

he said alot of things, you know, when we could post.

The best advice I can give anybody is dont let your home buying decisions hamstring you into years of pain.

True. Same here. I woke up with 14.7 IMBY and 20 at PTI. And it’s a 20 minute drive.

This is just really bad luck...just subtle changes could have resulted in a big miller A wiping the eastern US instead of just clipping Boston. These setups don't come around all that often.

We've had plenty of positively tilted troughs swing through and miss but I don't recall one this close to being a big event just miss us.

i watched state come down from 9 with 100 seconds left in the game and beat carolina which is giving me irrational hope that we can still reel something respectable in. massive keyword being "irrational". im fighting for my life out on the disco thread
