Misc 2021-22 Fall/Winter Whamby Thread

Y’all cry, I’ll enjoy white ground coverage of 1 inch of snow and 2-3 inches of sleet, wintry precip in the south is a W in its own way. as long as the ground turns white, it’s a W, and to add on to that ZR on trees, gonna look like a winter wonderland and it’s gonna stick around for a long time since sleet is hard to melt

I need the streets white as well or I’ll cry.

You're right, Nick told us we should be happy

To whoever lives there, move. That has got to suck!

My non-professional guess map for Georgia only.

  • Inside the black - 4-6" snow & up to .25" ice
  • NE of the blue line 1-4" snow, up to .15" ice
  • NE of the red line is T-2" snow, up to .1" ice
  • N of the yellow line will have backside rain/snow showers with no accumulation.

I am so jacked up for this, sleet fest, I can’t think straight. Should see more sleet in this storm than I’ve seen in the last decade combined, and probably the most I’ve ever seen in one single storm.

Anything fun to do with sleet? Can I make sleet cream, or a sleet man? Can I do sleet angels and then sled the sleet? Hoping so.

The blizzard of 2016/jonas is a good match to how sleety this storm will be, picked up 2 inches of sleet with that storm and it took a week to melt, I think this one goes higher, I got 2.5 of sleet here

It was mentioned earlier about an obs thread but as for now as we've done with recent events, all post specific to this system, including observations, will stay in this thread. It keeps it simple, also easier to moderate..... with that in mind, this place will be extremely busy so all one liner, off topic, this model sucks, how much for me, snow chasing, does Mack's chair still have snow comments will be deleted fairly quickly. Help us help you, use the whamby/banter thread and use this for storm specific info only, please and thank you
Just want to say I’m a fan of this. When we have an OBS thread and a model thread going at the same time, it gets confusing and the conversations inevitably crossover so that you have OBS in the main thread and model discussion in the OBS thread. Then you have to check two threads to see what you’re looking for. Much prefer just one thread for everything, personally!

That's the spirit. A good 3'' of concrete last much longer than pure snow. Not as much fun, but keeps the ground white longer.

There is one wildcard scenario where I argue sleet is better for sledding than snow, but there's a big catch. Ideally you want at least 2-3'' mostly sleet laid down, but then topped off with frz rn at the end. You need enough that it freezes a solid top layer, but not enough that it melts too much of whats fallen (or makes your power go out). That way the sled doesn't sink down, and the top layer is smoooooth. Especially fun on roads.

Otherwise, if you don't get that top layer, sledding on sleet sucks. It's uneven graupel, and not worth trying.

if only we could track storms like this that showed 45 and rain 7 days out and gradually came around to this setup, then i think we would all be pumped. just pain when you see modeled snow outputs that get you excited and then we trend to an icy mess.
