That was the last true ice storm I can remember. We’ve had a few storm with ice and sleet and snow but not a true ice storm since I think. We are waaayy overdue.

If I remember correctly that was an overachiever too. We didn’t even expect to be below freezing during it and then we had enough ice to take the power out for 12 hours. Classic overachieving CAD.

Atlanta has had these major icestorms since 2000:


- 1/28-9/2005
- 12/14-5/2005
- 2/12/2014: this one also knocked down the Eisenhower Tree at Augusta National and was worse in S and E metro ATL.. Tony (@dsaur ) got a big hit from this one I think. KATL, itself had plenty of ZR. I had some in Sandy Springs but the sleet along with some snow was the bigger part of it.

ATL, itself, (I don't mean N burbs) had no major icestorms 1980-1999! Then they suddenly they got two one week apart in 2000! Isn't weather amazing? And then two in 2005.

The ENSO that has favored major ZR in ATL the most has been cold neutral, which had major ZRs 50% of the time! In 2nd place is weak El Nino, followed by warm neutral. Next is weak La Nina, then mod/strong La Nina and last is mod/strong El Nino.

Edit: So, major ATL ZRs have tended to occur more often when ENSO was either neutral or weak and the least when ENSO was moderate to strong in either direction.

Also, they have mostly occurred when MJO was inside the circle interestingly enough!

Yep. I remember that. In fact, it was Lookout over on “the other site” that made me fill my bathtub with water in preparation. He was convinced it was gonna be a problem, and it was—-we didn’t have power for 4 days!

I remember that January 2005 ice event very well. It was a weekend event that started on a Friday. I was in middle school and it started as sleet Friday afternoon when I was walking home from school and by that night the freezing rain started mixing in and taking over. Back when TWC was informative I learned for the first time that just because you see white on radar that doesn't automatically translate snow, sometimes sleet and ice shows up as a snow algorithm. Thanks Jim Cantore. lol The worst of it was Fri night/Sat afternoon. By Sunday it was sunny in the mid 40s with nothing left but puddles lmao I barely remember December 2005 and January 2014 was more of a sleetstorm with very little ice where I am. (NW ATL; inside the perimeter).
 
Not sure where this belongs but I will not be using the Greek alphabet to discuss these storms. There is a growing amount of people out there that believe it’s wrong to omit some letters, name everything and among all to not just go back to names that have not been retired and more. There is a better way and this simply is not it. I will not refer to this naming convection and therefore not make any threads stating such names. I encourage other media outlets to make a stance on this matter before this ends up being the weather channel naming winter storms. #

In the grand scheme of things, this is a big nothingburger. No one really gives a rip.
