Wintry 1/5-7 Winter Weather

2.3ish… could have been more if we didn’t boof the early fronto to the south but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ most places had forecast 3-6, I think we barely crack 3 in the aggregate. WXRISK had me right on the 6 line. We’re not getting that lol. CC says we changeover soon.

Very nice snow, no wind, pasty enough to create snowballs but not at risk of hurting ratios

Just now being able to get on my phone and update.

Never been through a real ice storm before. And I don’t think I ever really want to again. Although, there is apart of me that enjoys being able to see the power of Mother Nature in all her forms.

One of the worst winter storms I’ve experienced in my life. Here in southern Illinois it’s like the day after tomorrow. We saw probably .75 or so of ice accrual all day long. Freezing drizzle after that all night. Finally an hour or so ago switched to snow. Snow will continue all night. Temps continue to drop.

Trees down everywhere. If the wind blows the trees will follow. The roads that were somewhat cleared from ice are now covered with snow. Complete ice rinks everywhere that wasn’t pretreated.

Did live hits all across the area. Trees over power lines. Roads a mess. Getting this all cleaned up will be a nightmare. Simply because temps don’t get above freezing for another week and we have multiple nights in the single digits (maybe lower??). The main road called route 13 that takes people from each small town to the next is completely dark.

The erriest night of my life. No power. Mystery tree sounds falling at random points. Power flash here. Power flash there. Now I sit back at my home no power just some candles. Listening to the trees crack as old man winter dumps some snow over everything to cover the treachery he bestowed on us today.

A remarkably powerful winter storm that I’m sure will make this area remember it. I certainly will.

Sounds like an almost worst case scenario. Not many people envision the possibility of these type of conditions. It's hard to imagine days or weeks without power in the absolute worst of winter conditions with single digits on the thermometer. I hope we can learn from your experience in this. I always try to imagine the worst and how to be prepared; but reading your post sends chills down my back.

Please post if we can help in any way. My prayers will be with you.

Sometimes you take winter weather warnings for granted but they are warnings for a reason. I myself have been caught up in the illusion that they are more tame. Luckily I made all the precautions necessary to hold me over for several days.. and hopefully power can be restored quicker than I think. Thanks for the kind words. Take the alerts seriously! Especially ice storms.

I will never understand why people want big ice storms, because of these very reasons. I see it a lot with the "i don't care what type, any frozen precip." I think people who haven't been in one don't understand the problems & damage they actually cause until it's too late.

I didn’t imagine that I would be dealing with freezing rain for this morning. I’m sitting at 30.8 degrees and it looks like a light band of precipitation is about to track over me. Temp won’t stay below freezing much longer but it’s just fun to be in the “game”.

Been out since 430am with consistent rain and temps around 32-33. Winston Salem, Clemmons Lewisville areas

Haven't measured yet. But I believe there's around a . 10 of ice. I do have a question for someone more knowledgeable than me. I constantly get snow returns on radar over a pocket of Burke County. Even though it's just a cold rain happens all the time in ice storms.

I'v been through a couple like that. It is very scary trying to sleep with trees snapping and transformers popping all night then power out for days. The last bad one we had was 30 years ago. This one looks to run out of water before we get anywhere near critical here. Hang in there!

Went to bed last night and we were pure ZR. Woke up at 4 and were sounded like mostly sleet. All ZR again by 630 when I got up for real. Ill need to make sure and get things cleaned up today once it stops raining before we get cold again. I have not looked at things for next weekend but hope it is not another slopfeast like this one!

Just woke up, love to see that north of DC areas completely busted. Looking out my window now I see at least .2 inches of freezing rain on power lines maybe .3.

I will say this the Foothills just don't get ice storms like we used to back in the 90s and 2000s. I remember getting three quarters of an inch of ice with 15 trees in my driveway. Topped off with snow and sleet.

Definitely over performed here in Davidson County. Started with a 2 hour delay and schools closed this morning. Always glad to have an optional workday to get some work done! Hope this bodes well for the system later this week!

Well around 2 inches of snow and a nice glaze this morning. Still 31.5°
