Misc General Banter Thread

Triangle area public schools are all closed for the risk of severe weather tomorrow. Don’t think that is something that ever happened when I was in school? We are just in the moderate risk area, too.
Sad thing is the schools are so well built the kids would be safer there. My kids are in a 2 hour delay.

That too. I guess the issue is that this may hit during the afternoon commute when kids are on busses, etc. Still surprising to me. At least they’re not canceling for drizzle like they’ve done many times here…

I was gonna say that myself. Almost made a grouchy old man post saying they never cancelled school back in MY day for severe weather, and I remember taking cover in the hallways a time or two. Why they gotta do it now??

All kidding aside, I am surprised. Was thinking they could at least let out early around noon or something, but maybe they don't trust the timing? Anyway, the remote thing changes things a bit as well. I reckon I'll allow it without complaining too much..

No I definitely remember having to seek shelter in the hall and cover our heads a couple times and nothing was ever that close even

Shrugs

I guess they have bad memories of Enterprise and the school in Moore

The latest I've seen snow was April 20, 2021. About 2 or 3 inches.
Where was that at?

The latest I’ve seen snow here personally was March 30th ish, 2003. The latest I’ve ever seen snow was in early May 2017 a few times during a Baltic Sea cruise (in particular in Helsinki and Stockholm).

Not sure if this counts, but I have seen sleet and graupel that was observed across the metro Atlanta area on April 8-9, 2022, and I’m sure somebody got some flakes (esp. mountains) as well. Latest wintry precip I’ve seen here in the SE. I believe there is a documented case of accumulating snow in parts of the SE that happened in the middle of April back sometime in the early 1900s.

Atlanta had 1.5” of snow on April 25th, 1910, believe it or not! That’s 2 weeks later than the second latest, which was in 1918, and is their heaviest in April. They haven’t at the official station had measurable in April since 1918. They had 3 of them 1891-1918.

I got one! Here's my latest one ever. Lived in Ahoskie in the NE part of the state back then. Eastern NC peeps would remember I bet.

There was some crazy stuff happening late winter/spring 1989. (although Dec 89 gets the most attention)

I've always wondered what went into the setup for that one. There was an even later one in mid-April 1983, as well (although it may arguably be less impressive given a lot of these areas see more snow than the Coastal Plain in general).

There was also this which I know nothing about, but found it on Webber's site:

Wow, April 25th? That is really wild. The 1910s were a good time for April snow in the SE, I guess. Curious if ATL got anything from the April 1915 mauler, as well?

Found this interesting graphic of latest snowfalls on record in Raleigh. It does seem late-season snowfall in the late 1800s / early 1900s was probably more common here than it is nowadays.

I think we have a winner on late snowfall around these parts. RDU average high 76 historically on May 2. I love how it says "heavy thundersnow & thundersleet". Ground temps had to have been scorching. lol
