Pattern December Doldrums 2025 🎄 ❄️

Crazy to think Jan 85 was 41 years ago. I’m almost positive that was the year that Bay St. Louis, MS bay froze solid. It’s a mostly brackish shallow bay. I think my mom has pictures of me as a 2 year old walking out on the solid ice bay, quite a ways out from the sea wall.
The sounds in NC froze as well. Remember that cold snap very well.

I'm starting to wonder if this is one of those rare winters it never really snows here

I was afraid when we started so cold so early on. That's been the common theme among them

You can't say stuff like that in here...you will upset the masses. But yeah...we could be cooked...

Models are always wrong...winter hasn't even started...cancelling winter in Dec LOL...CAD will save us....get ready for it.

Be honest. Do you think there's any chance that some areas may have already seen their coldest temps that they will see for the entire winter season ?

I’ll give my answer. Based on history, the chance of these mid Dec very cold temps ending up being the coldest of the season is in the very general vicinity of 50%. And then it could also end up a mix where some don’t get this cold again and some do.
In other words it’s totally unpredictable and a coin flip would be just as good a predictor.

Well, we hit 11.5 degrees. That will be hard to beat with normal winter temps. So, maybe some folk have seen their coldest temps of the winter.

Radiated down to 17.4 this morning.
19.6 here. Already a pretty good winter. A couple of winters ago my lowest was 23, so I'm well ahead of that, and winter's only just getting started. It always gets colder enough for ip/sn, the trick is getting it to rain at the same time. Maybe this is the year. I don't know what to think of Tech bball. The talent is there, but will they learn to play together before the ACC is half past. Right now it's a bunch of shooters who can't shoot.

Heads it's sleet, tails it's snow!

Everybody look at Kylo, ladies and gentlemen. Apparently, he needs a hug.

No need to make it personal....was just sarcasm. Geez.

You've always been one of my favorite posters, but I am tired of logging on and seeing passive aggressive strawman-type posts.

This isn't just you. But we're going to put a stop to that. It just makes everybody mad. I'm going to call out every post where I see it from now on.

If you or anyone else has a beef with how someone responds to a post of yours when you are providing good analysis, then PM them and work it out or let the staff know that it's bothering you. Or I can set up a winter battle thread and we can have a free for all.

I am so sick of the constant passive aggressive stuff every time the weather turns bad. It is like clockwork every winter. The staff is going to start muting posters if we don't get that under control.

Low of 20.3 this morning.
Now this is a straight heart to heart from just a snowman. I think January will end up below normal, probably start AN but I think by January 10 or shortly after the cold starts finding its way back into the east it’s just what my magic crystal ball straight from the north pole tells me. It’s also seeing February as being a good month for winter weather in the southeast also, something we’ve not seen in a long time.

So you're saying if someone don't like Snow and winter it's wrong if they post something to someone about the opposite??

I think the point he is making in this specific situation is that people react emotionally by going back to their default setting of negativity & a lot of times that comes in the form of cheering for something they don't actually want to happen (warm weather). And let's just be real, we are all pulling for Winter weather in the season of Winter in here..

And btw, in relation to the weather world, this happens a lot outside of this weather forum. People do it on social media also. In fact, people do it with all things in life that don't go their way. You got people on X so deep into this mentality that they go around purposely trolling weather people with no profile pics. You can read right through people. Basic Psychology 101. I mean we can be irritated about the pattern & keep it real, but the ole "it's over" mentality & everything that comes with it ain't the way. There is a happy medium in handling emotion & the truth is that many people go their entire life without figuring it out. And trust me, I am on that journey myself. 2017-2018 Winter here in Columbia about made me quit this hobby lmao.

Oh I loved the 2017-2018 winter. I was in Indiana and experienced my coldest temp ever of -12 ! Late December/Early January that winter was pretty amazing. And then we had a big cold spell in April 2018. I also was visiting my friend in Delaware in January and got to experience my first Nor'Easter !

No we "All" are not. Just because it's winter doesn't mean EVERYONE wants winter weather. That's exactly why anyone in here should be able to pull for warm weather in winter if they do please to

I approve of the winter battle thread.

Maybe a chance of snow in parts of Georgia on Thursday Night ?

Rain showers before 4am, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Some thunder is also possible. Low around 34. Chance of precipitation is 90%.
Where do you see this? Not nearly cold enough aloft as 850mb temp is above freezing (10 degrees C or higher) all over GA, Thursday night, Friday morning.

Yea, this is how I remembered it as well. The last five days of Dec-1984, Memphis recorded highs in the 70's and lows in the 50's, then flipped cold on Jan-3, 1985 and we received 8.1" of snow. This was one of my favorite snow events that month as we received a total of 21" for the season. Many southeast cities had record lows later that month.
Yes, once the Aleutian ridge broke down, cold quickly came East in waves. The mid-south was hit first, then each successive front spread cold further East. Here in East Tn imby, after shorts and t-shirts (70) on New Years, snow ended up falling on 17 days in January and we got 18 inches of snow for the month. I'm not sure when this Aleutian high formed, but it seems like it's been around at least for the last week. So with luck, we are around 4 weeks or less from it breaking down. That would hopefully give us a good window in the heart of winter (Jan 15th-Feb 15th). Snow also fell on multiple days in February with 14 inches just before Valentine's Day. That one ended winter, and everyone was ready for it to be over after the month of cold and snow events.

Not in anyway saying we'll see a 1985 again, but this pattern won't last forever and we may have a grim few weeks if you love cold, but once it breaks, winter may roar back, especially if we get it to break down around the 30 day mark as they average doing.

12z GFS highs for Christmas Day

🤩

Enjoy these kind of gorgeous days while you have them before the mosquitoes wake up from their winter slumber

Should the highs here per the 12Z on Christmas in the low 70s with dewpoints in the low to mid 50s verify, it wouldn’t be what I’d prefer as I’d especially much rather have dewpoints in the 30s or 40s. But compared to a typical summer high/dewpoints of 20 F warmer, it’s heaven. This is the perspective I typically have during my favorite season.

In recent years, winters sure start earlier and end earlier. Last week will go down as the best week of Winter 2025-2026. I don't like it, but I am afraid it will be the case.

Keep the hope and get to the high country when you can, but even the high country will be starved for snow over the next month.

Fortunately, there are cooler temperatures coming after this torch of a Christmas. The mosquitoes and other flying pests would be out in force if we had a prolonged spell of weather like this.

All I will say is, if you like warm winters, fine. But you're in the wrong place trying to fanboy that. This is a southern weather forum where the majority of the people want cold and snow etc. Rooting for warm weather and trolling the board is weirdo behavior. Which I don't know why you would want to be here if those are your feelings anyways? There's nothing fun to track or discuss when it's 60 and 70 degrees during winter. Literally nothing. Why do you think the board goes almost dormant during the summer outside of tropical weather tracking. Just my opinion
