Energy stuff ain’t my forte, but short term can’t Europe just born more coal?
Not so easy if they dismantled their coal burning power plants. China can get a new coal fired plant up and running in a few months, though. So, if the incentive is there, they can get something done by next winter, maybe? It's a bit crazy to think of it, but Russia invading Ukraine might be the necessary incentive to stop the foolish no-carbon energy policy, world-wide.

So, all of Biden's warmongering talk failed. Russia can avoid most sanctions thru China and the ones they cant wont last long at all.
Make no mistake these sanctions are going to be a punch in the gut plus it's targeted toward the oligarchs who in return may put the pressure on Putin to lossen the screws a little per se.

I disagree. Not that Germany said F your pipeline I think he only has one option at this point which would be to invade. History shows he doesn't give two ----- about the Russian economy or the Russian people

Oh I agree they have the cash reserves too. They've pulled billions out since late last year in foreign currency. The sanctions are not perfect but we have very few options it's a very delicate situation to say the least. After listening to Putin's speech I also question his state of mind currently.

I just dont think the sanctions will matter much at all and they wont last long in any case. Lets not forget the Biden/Obama admin was in charge when Putin began carving up Ukraine and took Crimea. We gave Ukraine some worthless guarantees of safety and now we have a new cold war.

This isn't going to end by sanctions alone and I think our Western leaders already know this.

What are we supposed to then if sanctions don't work? Start WW3 by going into a hot war with Russia? Russia does have over 6,000 nuclear weapons and so does the US. More than enough to destory the entire world.

I think our options are very limited. Its too late now of course but we should have spent the last 7 years arming Ukraine with state of the art weapons. In the end we are going to have to accept we can do almost nothing now.

Or since we don't need their carbon based energy Russia has no power on the global stage anymore.

Wars have been fought for lesser things. Unless things deescalate quickly, there will not be any off-ramps out of this. When one looks at human history, you have to admit that it's only a matter of time before nuclear powers face off directly in a military conflict.

A week ago many of us believed Russia would eventually pull its forces back. Since then Putin as sent his troops into these breakaway republics; announced that Ukraine has no right to soveriegnty; and that the break-up of the USSR was the greatest political catstrophe of the 20th century. The drum beats of war are loud and need to be take seriously.

Not to get political here but could you imagine how much more tense things could be if our last president was in office? I feel like we would have attacked first and even double downed on taking back Crimea out of spite. What a time to be alive

Russia is going to lose big here, Germany hit on their pipeline is a big deal but it has not been built yet but it is a clear sign that if Russia wants to sell gas to Europe this is the wrong way to go about it, they are going to lose hundreds if not thousands of soldiers in a massively unpopular war, and when the sanctions due out today all come home to roost and the top Russian oligarchs start feeling the squeeze they will be begging Putin to back off. There is nothing for Putin to win here, at best he ends up with two little "independent" nations that don't want to be under his umbrella and will be a constant thorn in his side.

The western countries are flexing a lot of capabilities right now and making sure Putin see's all of it. In the end Russia is not a a super power anymore, their nukes is the only reason they are able to try and force global policy. The USA however can and will project power anywhere on the planet we want, when we want and with the ability to use that force to win. Those post WeatherNC makes about asset moving are a very clear warning and indicator to Putin that the USA is taking this very very seriously.

Putin is such a nice guy he has gone through the proper channels to get permission to start his war.
