Mesoscale Discussion 0379
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0546 AM CDT Mon Apr 13 2020

Areas affected...Eastern North Carolina into southeastern Virginia
and portions of the southern Delmarva Peninsula

Concerning...Tornado Watch 118...

Valid 131046Z - 131215Z

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 118 continues.

SUMMARY...An evolving squall line is expected to overspread the
region through 9-11 AM EDT accompanied by the risk for tornadoes
and/or potentially very damaging wind gusts.

DISCUSSION...The squall line is gradually intensifyng along the
deepening pre-frontal surface trough axis, which is forecast to
continue shifting across the North Carolina/Virginia piedmont, into
the coastal plain through 13-15Z. The latest Rapid Refresh suggests
that further strengthening of the associated southerly 850 mb jet
core in excess of 70 kts is possible, and extreme low-level shear
may coincide with increasing boundary-layer destabilization
associated with continued low-level moisture advection and at least
some daytime heating. This environment probably will continue to
support intensifying mesoscale cyclonic circulations within the
squall line, accompanied by a risk for tornadoes and/or locally
potentially very damaging wind gusts.

Several gusts into the 50s the last 15 minutes.

Storms rolled through my neck of the woods about 3-5am. They were surprisingly tame which was a good thing but there was a ton of lightning which made me briefly worry about loss of power.

I hope everyone in Eastern NC is doing alright, I heard there was a tornado.

Things sure got out of hand after I went to sleep. I hope everyone is safe and sound.

Do we know if anything hit Clayton, NC?

Pretty uneventful for Johnston County in NC (yes just Johnston County in NC, I understand that there are other area's hard hit). Nothing more than drizzle and breezy to be honest. I could have left my trash can out...

Despite the three tornado warned storms rolling through between 5-6:30 nothing much happened around me either. We got really lucky. Seems like the line moving through earlier than anticipated may have helped us out.

Just saw damage from Monck's Corner in Berkeley County of a house major damage on the news here. Supercell also produced damage in Horry County in Myrtle Beach... Same cell that started in Estill SC traversed the lower part of SC finally exited off the coast.

Getting my strongest winds now as the skies lift and clear. Gusting low 40s I guess. Was a big nothingburger for mby but a lot of places got hammered

7.38” rain in Watauga triggered the PDS Flash Flood Emergency.

Everything falling apart as it moves towards Elizabeth City. Doesn’t look like it’s going to be a big deal. From radar returns I’m guessing we won’t have thunderstorms as this line moves through.

1.5 million outages in the US. NC is #1 and increasing as coastal communities are under the gun.

no power and something crazy was going on right behind the storms. Low clouds racing SE to NW winds ripping trees down neighbors privacy fence blown down and just screaming winds.

Make sure yall report any damage (like downed trees, structural damage to houses, etc) to your local NWS office, we really need those local storm reports to make our future forecasts better!
Doesn’t make forecasts better if short range models continue to be off up to 4 hours just prior to the event.

Can you explain wtf just happened to my local area. Either side of me there's not a lot of wind reports going on But MBY has been getting beat down for the last hour. Im a few miles SSW of PGV they are sustained 40 gusting to 55. The LLJ or some kind of reverse outflow(please don't laugh at me) was screaming from the SE moving NW and the wind was just ripping.

Evaporatively cooled air in the wake of the storms to your east & south with strong southerly flow out ahead of an approaching front, coinciding with saturated soils from the immediately preceding heavy rainfall probably has a lot to do w/ it
