Nice! Why did I think you would be our blacksmith? Lol.... So I've got a million questions haha. Seriously I'd love to try my hand at bladesmith but don't have any of the tools so I'll be starting out from scratch, don't want to throw a ton of money into it until I'm confident I can even do it. Looking at constructing a primitive coal fired forge... any suggestions? I've read up on it, looked at videos seems fairly straight forward at beginner level anyway.... you considered master blacksmith?

Look up the "55" forge made out of an old 55 gallon barrel or brake drum forge. The key is to start as cheap as possible. Buy a cheap ballpeen hammer from Home Depot and a cheap pair of "Channel Lock pliers. Go to a local junk yard and find a good sized piece of steel for an anvil and some junk steel. If scrounged correctly you could probably do it all for less that $50. You will have to find coal, buthe in your area it shouldn't be hard. Buy "blacksmith" coal, not cheap stove coal.

Blacksmithing isn't nearly as hard or mystical as people want to make it. It's a few principles that you do a little more as you learn. So definitely YouTube will help as will finding a local forge group or headin to a local fair or event to talk to a blacksmith and observe.

As far as me being a master, I would barely make begginer.

Good site.

Yeah I've seen the 55 forge and think this is what I may try, also I've looked at making my own coal have you ever done that? Thanks for the info and the link to the forge forum, checking it out now....

Yeah my coal forge is completely made by myself except for my hand crank blower. Most people prefer a electric blower to feed air, but I like hand cranked because you can feed just the right amount if air. It also helps you to not burn up your work.

That's great info and thanks! If/when I ever get this up and going I'll submit a pic.....

Stumbled on this today (it's buried in one of the Wiki models I put up and I'd never even seen this embedded there before).
Pretty neat, IMHO, so here's sharing if anyone is interested, or feels he/she can use it for study/analysis:

I know you can get glasses to watch the eclipse, and you can make things to see it. But couldn't you just turn your back to it and use the camera on your phone to see it?

Given the quality of front facing cameras, you will see very little as it would focus on the light even in totality, not to mention how reflective your screen is.

Only with a selfie stick!

Lol once again the Joe Bastardi hype train crashes and burns and he jinxes another potential TC in the southwestern Atlantic. Classic.

On second thought the more I read and look at videos the more I realize there are about a 1000 ways to make your own forge lol.... I'm gonna raid my dad's scrap piles and see what I can come up with. Something to hold the coals, help retain some heat and airflow appears all I really need to fashion a working, although be it somewhat crude, beginner forge. 55 gallon drum may be the way but an old grill or heck even some old disc blades with a little welding might just do the trick.... time to put some country folks can survive ingenuity to work

That is the thing, you build something easy and work your way up so you aren't spending much. My first forge was a brake drum with welded on 2" pipe set in an old metal work table. The forge I use now has a plate steel firebox and table welded up by myself. The next one will be similar but I'll probably buy a thick cast iron firepot that will last forever.

The hardest part is when you start looking for an anvil. That is when your scrounging skills are put to the test.

American seems to be down. That place has been a ghost town lately anyway.
Is that place even a forum anymore or is it a troll cave? I remember last winter one guy bragged about winning on a snowstorm and I found that disgusting he created a thread about himself only. There are some horrible mods over there too who can't tolerate a sneeze, but somehow seem to have given up because all they have are troll. Without people, you have no anything. There isn't any real knowledge or learning going around much either.
