Ukraine

It's becoming clear that the Russians have made some serious tactical and logistical blunders. It's probably a combination of poor planning and hubris. No idea if will make difference in the eventual outcome but it is worth noting.

Reports are circulating that before the invasion some of the Russian troops were selling their gas and other supplies for vodka and cheap thrills while not being told the real reason they were there. That's nuts and speaks of very poor discipline and leadership.

I don't want to overreact to short term swings, but I feel there's been a remarkable shift in public perception globally in the last 2 days, and really 24 hours. Ukraine appears defiant and unwavering, while Russian leadership looks to have become more unhinged, with escalating rhetoric to try getting Ukraine to lay down and let them takeover. Meanwhile, images of mothers and kids in subway bomb shelters are being broadcast from cities away from the supposed disputed regions.

The longer this goes on, I think the longer Russia looks the villain, which is why the Kyiv push is so dangerous and likely critical. Putin might think everything depends on capturing that city quickly and at any cost. I'm hoping for the best obviously, but its scary to think of what might happen there in the coming days.

Civilian casualties will change opinions unlike anything, US learned in Iraq and Afghanistan. Russia will learn here on the global stage.

Feeling fairly confident of NATO and largely US/UK/France with a few others, highly capable fighting force with modern NCO corps.

Russia failed in decentralized command, Ukraine with NATO support started to build out this central corps for military engagements based on modern doctrine.

They are getting handled around Kyiv right now, but the Russians have plenty of equipment and troops and can outlast them if they wanted to but the cost would be horrific for them.

They will never be able to take Kyiv without leveling it....and the world would not sit back and watch that happen. Hence the talk of Patriots etc to prevent ballistic missile strikes etc....Poland is sending equipment etc, and it wont be long before volunteers start forming groups that go in as mercenaries for Ukraine. Russia will not win this war.

I would think this is not true. It would be viewed as a true attack on Russia. Maybe he was speaking of more handheld surface to air missiles. This is just my opinion. BTW- That other post of the women that I posted, might be a fake picture

You gotta take some of the "info" with a grain of salt, but if the Ukraine forces are doing anywhere near as well as we're being Twittered, then Vlad may go mad and that's not the Sunday AM to wake up to ...
When this goes urban warfare, and it likely will perhaps as soon as tomorrow, there will be dead bodies everywhere and that doesn't favor the aggressor. If it's his men, moral can go south in a snap. If its piles of dead Ukrainians the worlds attitude goes south.

There is a good discussion here. I have wondered the same. Some think the US or NATO is the reason. No way to know.

If Russia can't even conquer Ukraine, then we'll know all the people responsible for all the Russia mongering we've heard over the last several years are full of crap. And there's a lot of them.
Yep the only way Russia wins is with bigger bombs. Seems like the manpower isn’t working just yet. I wouldn’t be shocked if we see some big boys drop.

I know Russia doesn't care, but this is a serious war crime isn't it?

This is an interesting development. UAE is an American partner in the Middle East and we have troops there.

Most of the troops are still on the boarder

Might be a smart move if Russia uses some big boys. If I was Russia I would drop the biggest I have than bring in the troops to clean up. If I was Ukraine I would hope Russia doesn’t think like I do. I’m happy to Ukraine fighting but they need help.

US has 8 F-22s in UAE and ~4K service members, F-22s were deployed a couple weeks ago.

A squadron or two of Gen 4 exists.

Super critical international airspace!

Yeah I mean if they cant handle the Ukraine with second rate Russian equipment ( though all those western ATM's and manpads are coming in handy ) without these kind of losses then they would get smoked against any major NATO nation. One caveat is they are not going total war here, they are not using a lot of the bigger nastier stuff they have at their disposal.

They are learning you dont do anything half-ass. They should have hit Ukraine with everything the first hour. And they didnt black out Ukraine, another mistake.

Well I think Putin took Ukraine lightly. Without knowing his endgame it’s hard to say if Putin will pull out heavier fighting materials.

Yeah, it seems like from the armchair generals (not directed at anyone here), they have committed multiple tactical errors and are getting continually repelled by an inferior force. I realize they're not using nukes or everything in their arsenal, but if this is the best they can do, I'm not inclined to spend a lot of time worrying about them on the global stage as any serious threat (unless we think they'll just start nuking people, which I don't).

This probably wont last as long as the Russo/Finnish war of 39/40 but in that war the Russians suffered initial defeats but then came back and overwhelmed the Finns. Hitler then made a gross mis-calculation and assumed the Russian army would be easily defeated in 1941. Putin is botching this but things can change quickly. If he does get defeated then i imagine he will be assassinated.
