I think that's likely correct.

No NATO troops are on Ukraine ground, but there are 4 NATO nations bordering them. (not including those across the Black Sea) So I'd imagine there's a risk of accidental direct engagement that both Russia and US would like to avoid because something could happen near a border.

This kinda reminds me of 40+ years of those cold war conflicts back in the day where both sides did everything they could to fight each other without directly shooting each other. I think that's what we're about to see here.
 
Hopefully Putin doesn't have some terminal disease and isn't about to yolo it

Idk what it is. If Putin does indeed invade I think he does it to prove a point to other world leaders that he doesn’t care about sanctions. Putin wants to look like a dominant world leader who isn’t afraid of anyone
