Context clarification on the $1.7 billion Iran got in 2016: it wasn’t a gift. As usual, Trump misleads and/or makes things up:

The Obama administration did approve a $1.7 billion payment to Iran in 2016 and later reporting said the money was delivered in foreign cash. The payment was not simply given or a gift to the Islamic Republic. It represented the settlement of a decades-old legal dispute regarding $400 million that Iran paid the U.S., before the 1979 Iranian Revolution, for military equipment it never received, plus roughly $1.3 billion in interest.

When the settlement was announced on Jan. 17, 2016, Obama said, "Iran will be returned its own funds, including appropriate interest, but much less than the amount Iran sought." He added that the agreement could save the U.S. billions of dollars compared to the possible outcome if the case had continued.

1.7 billion settlement was paid in cash because sanctions had isolated the Islamic Republic from the international financial system. As a result, the payment was made in euros, Swiss francs and other foreign currencies rather than through a bank transfer.

Sorry to disagree. It was a gift imo. Obama is a heavy sympathizer to Iran, anything Islam. John Kerry right there with him as his daughter married top Iranian official. To be fair every Admin since the 1970s is to blame for this situation Even Trump to a degree thinking you can wheel an deal with these zealots. Biggest problem all admins have made is confussing regualr joe Iranian citizen with the ones in charge. They have a totally different prisim, world view. As has been evidenced past couple of months, you cant negotiate with them. Same for their proxies.

NCSNOW,
Sympathizer or not, Obama didn’t “gift” the $1.7 billion to Iran. It was $400 million owed to them in a legal settlement plus $1.3 billion in interest as my source just clearly explained.

trump will taco again and reach a last second 48 hr + ceasefire. the only way this ends, is when he leaves office

Trump is damned if he does damned if he doesn't with you guys
i consider myself fairly right learning.

i think it's silly we spent so much money and will end up at best, with another iran nuclear deal like obama did much cheaper before. what was the point of pulling out of the other deal if that type of deal is exactly where things will end up again? lol

I agree with you but none of that is definite to happen. Wait and see is what I'm doing.

Obama gave that directly to a government that was calling for death to the nation he was the supposed leader of. The money, if you wanted to make things right should have went to the people that supported the Shah of Iran so they might be able to get back some of the property the radical Islamist stole from them. It was inexcusable and treachery against the people wjo put Obama in office....He should HAVE TO LIVE IN SOUTHERN LEBANON FOR THE DESTRUCTION HE CAUSED THERE!

the only way is regime change and the people having control of the country. that is not happening. iran will never agree to any type of terms, regardless of what they are, unless they are in their favor. they showed us in 2015 they will do what they want anyways. they have proven that trump wont actually do what is necessary to end all of this, which is to empower the people to change the regime.

they do not care if their power and water facilities are blown up. it helps them by giving them a firmer grip on a population that would overthrow them, but they have to rely on them for help instead.

this is all very simple. regime change or nothing. that is the corner we are in. there is a select country that benefits from this, surely not us. we were never under threat from a nuclear weapon from iran. one country talked us into this fiasco.

sadly, that one country wants the territory, they don't want the iranian people to keep it, hence the pushback against complete regime change. they'd rather fight over the land and borders indefinitely than to never be able to outright own it.

Or even better for Iran if the US has to leave the middle east and all sanctions get lifted.

1. Money ($1.7B) was sent to Iran (nobody is debating that), but it wasn’t a gift. It was based on legally settling something going way back to the 1970s as was stated. That’s why the interest was >3 times the principal. Evidently, the settlement could have been much higher per what Iran requested.

2. What you’re saying sounds good and I wish that could have been done, but how would the US have been able to get the $ directly to the citizens opposing the evil mullahs even with them making up the majority of citizens? Don’t you think Obama would have had that done that if it were feasible? Why wouldn’t he?

Shawn,
Would you elaborate on the paragraph I quoted above? I don’t follow what you’re saying.
