Felt like a panic hire similar to lowe. Id love to be wrong but I'm not sure this ends well. There is a part of the fan base that's pumped about it and that's awesome. Unfortunately it's the same part that uses beating unc as the measuring stick and has kept dave around too long
That Lowe comparison is interesting. I always thought he was good at X's and O's coaching wise, but not a strong recruiter? Maybe Gainey's got some good recruiting experience while at Tenn. We'll see.

I believe NC State found a winner when they hired Justin Gainey. He is an alumni and four year starter for the basketball program back in the nineties. Cliff Barnes, the Tennessee coach had glowing things to say about him as an assistant coach on his staff. A good friend of mine who is a NC State booster was hoping that Gainey or the coach at St. Louis University would be hired. This will be Justin Gainey's first head coaching job but he already has experience recruiting at Tennessee and he knows his X and Os from his experience as a player and coach.

It’s officially one of the best weeks of the year!!

It looks like the Tar Heels have their new basketball coach. Michael Malone who was the coach of the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets in the NBA has been hired according to reports. Malone has extensive NBA coaching experience with a overall winning record but no head coaching experience at the college level. His daughter is a volleyball player at Carolina. He is 54 years old.

2 years and he is back to the NBA. Looks like nobody wanted that job.

You could be right. Once his daughter graduates, he might think about other opportunities, especially if the money is right.

The UNC Athletic Department has made some terrible hiring decisions during the tenure of Bubba Cunningham as athletic director. Not to mention that it got behind the eight ball with the new rules concerning the transfer system that allows athletes to pick and choose which schools they want to play for. Instead of all of the coaching changes in the major programs during recent years, in my opinion, Cunningham should have been fired years ago.

I actually really like the hire. Might be biased though, lol.

A lot of potential there with a former NBA coach who's won a championship. Still relatively youngish (54). Obvious question is recruiting, but I think the NBA experience helps with that, assuming he puts together a good staff that's savvy on the current state of college NIL stuff.
