Pattern May-hem

SPC latest disco for day 2... Just something to keep an eye on in if you're in the Carolinas, may have a heightened risk for tornadoes tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Picture speaks a 1000 words ...

Is it me, or did the page suddenly get narrower?

It was me - Firefox did something weird!

Light to occasionally moderate rain today. Definitely an under performer, and not in need of current flood watch! Sky is lightening up now and sun trying to poke through! Maybe tomorrow will bring the goods

There goes another tornado watch in SC... Definitely need to keep an eye out tomorrow in the Carolinas the environment could be even more conducive for a few isolated tornadoes than it is today over SC and GA, especially if any inkling of instability materializes....

Thanks for not including N Fl in that!

Yeah, while the instability may be better in Florida, wind damage will probably be the biggest threat down there, the shear will be much better over the Carolinas, especially if this secondary lee side cyclone gets cranking over the western Carolinas.

I'm "liking" for the info, not for what it says! Wind damage ...

Apparently some significant damage with a tornado in Sampson County in North Carolina, driving along and listening to a news simulcast on on the radio.

Getting an absolute deluge here in a thunderstorm that started a few minutes ago! Yesterday, I only got a little while the airport got a record rainfall for ANY day in May from localized thunderstorms that persisted there (NW of SAV).

As I speak, tornado warning just issued for the area!

Then we have a good setup Thursday for some decent hailers

Once again there's severe weather that actually happens when there's not a severe thunderstorm or tornado watch. When we have a watch most of the time there aren't even any storms around.

Interesting near Savannah

The above pic is looking WNW from AJ's restaurant (I was there recently) on SW Tybee Island to the tornado that was then ~3-5 miles to the WNW of there and likely then over marsh/water. Here is a google map showing AJ's on the far right and Wilmington Island on the left side:

Map showing AJ's: https://www.google.com/maps/place/A...8653c150ac93f6!8m2!3d31.9973015!4d-80.8548015

When the photo was taken based on the direction as best as I can tell, it had likely already just moved ENE to NE away from Wilmington Island. There was tornado damage (including large trees on several homes) on the SW tip of Wilmington Island that likely occurred a few minutes before this photo was taken. Fortunately, this tornado was warned 10 or so minutes before it crossed Wilmington Island. From eyewitness reports, it lasted only ~10 seconds with apparently little or no rain before it. This tornado traveled a few miles SE of Savannah, itself, at its closest and also missed Tybee to the west by a couple of miles.

On a good note, I got 1.32" of rainfall from both the storm that produced that tornado along with a 2nd storm that was behind it. I saw no unusually high winds but rather the typical gusty winds with the storm that produced the tornado. I see more thunderstorms approaching from the west. So, some more rainfall appears imminent.

Wow, a 2nd tornado warning on a track just a few miles south of the track of the earlier tornado! Whatever this is, it went over southern Skidaway Island, which is several miles S of Wilmington Island. Hopefully, this will miss Tybee to the south.

A report of a boat overturning was just received but the Coast Guard is onto it and hopefully those on the boat are ok.

Edit: my total rainfall on 5/23 was 1.56".
