March 2026 - Winter or Spring?

The amount of pollen being blown around and displaced right now is borderline inhumane

poured heavy snow for a couple hours in DC - im downtown so didnt see anything stick on the sidewalks or roads where im at but im sure theres a dusting around the parks etc.
slowing down now, but that was a fun mid-march spurt of snow!
Lol. Yeah parts of Fairfax County reporting close to 2 inches.

Ensembles and the AI looks good. EPS looks way warmer than the OP euro as well. Time to
Jump on the warm train because it’s choo choing it’s way into the medium range, ready to roast the weenies

I'm just not a fan of heat period let alone this early in the season just like you are not a fan of cold or cool in the spring or summer. It is what it is we sure cant change it either way.

Richmond clocked 87 at 3pm yesterday. Today at 3pm it is 32 with heavy snow. That is something you see in the high plains, not here. Curious if we’ve ever seen that here in recorded history.
I've tracked weather in this part of the world for most of my life. I have never seen it go literally from summer and sunshine to winter and heavy snow in just a day. The thought of Richmond getting an inch of snow a day after hitting 89 is insane. That stuff usually happens in the western plains and the east side of the Rockies.

Christiansburg got smoked today. Ground was completely covered(around an inch or so). It even accumulated on the roads including interstate 81, causing numerous wrecks. Was almost 80 yesterday. Got as low as 29 during thr heaviest snow.
We never got out of the sleet. Odd to maintain the warm nose somewhere above when places east and west went all snow. Something about this valley though. I did see 31 for a time and yes, we had some attempted accumulation on pavement. I think we were close to .5 sleet here.
Really nuts!

After having July like temps the day before.

Yeah, I think the storm and then the wind actually made my car dirtier, sigh. (very late)

What happened in Virginia if you combine yesterday and today was pretty interesting. Would've probably made me sick, but I again say I need to move to the upper south, and yet I can't say I realistically have plans to do so.

(and while I ramble on lmao, I'd also love the idea of NC, but in my head, I'm most interested in sw NC, but that probably doesn't give you a major snow advantage)

I just realized this is the four-year anniversary of the heavy snow squall / shower I saw up in Richmond on March 12, 2022 when I was up there for the weekend. It didn’t snow long, but boy did it sure pour down for a little bit! I think it was a wet snow, too!

That's almost enough to tempt me into job hunting around RIC. lol

I was coming through Richmond right when most of that was falling this afternoon. We were returning from chaperoning my son’s 8th grade field trip to DC this week. We left Mt Vernon to head home about 1:30 and the snow was just starting to mix in. It was puking heavy wet snow by the time we got on I-95

I took my first walk outside in ~a week this evening due to the end of false summer. It was pleasant with near normal mid 50s, dewpoints near 40, and a nice steady breeze. Looking forward to nice walking wx over almost every one of the next 10 days. Spring has sprung. Actually it is a fallback to spring in this odd March!

The general Middle Georgia area actually had three confirmed tornadoes from the line that came through yesterday morning. Houston County had a confirmed EF-1 in the Highway 96 area, Bibb County had a confirmed EF-1 in the Thomaston Rd. area that did extensive damage to a subdivision of new homes, and there was a confirmed EF-2 in the Marshallville area of Macon County. The Marshallville tornado displaced at least sixty residents of the area.

Even RDU made it to 32!
That's the latest official freeze at RDU since 2023. Maybe things are working like they used to again? 2024 had its last freeze on February 21, and 2025 had its last on March 3.

RDU should get at least one more freeze next week, with the possibility of a hard freeze in the 20s.

It was 29 degrees at 7:00 AM at my house not far from Lake Wheeler in Raleigh. The frost was one of the heaviest I've seen this winter.
Yea, very heavy frost this morning. Quite a lot of fog coming off Lake Lynn ( I should have took a pic). I'm sure Wheeler was the same. Got the song "Smoke on the Water" stuck in my head.

Pretty bad considering our average last freeze is around the end of the month / beginning of April, IIRC. We did get a couple freezes in late April 2021, at least.

^^^I hate this area's official temp is tied to the RDU airport. That sensor has been way too warm (compared to surrounding areas) for years now. I know they have checked it, but maybe the "heat island" effect is now in play at that location. If so, how do we compare historic temp changes for the area, not just the location?

So even the NWS knows the Euro sucks!
Euro, GFS, NWS forecast this AMIMG_4985.pngIMG_4986.pngIMG_4983.jpeg
