March 2026 - Winter or Spring?

TL/DR - torch now, freeze later.

Tomorrow's forecast high for CHA is 83, which would break the record for earliest 83 ever recorded by 6 days (current record holder for earliest 83 is March 12th, 1967). Worth mentioning that the torch in 1967 was followed a week later with back-to-back days with low temps of 22.

Did some digging on other early March torches and how cold it got later on. And 100% of the time, record warmth in early March is followed by a freeze later, usually hard ones and/or late ones.

1951...record high of 81 on the 2nd...hit 25 later that month.

2022...record high of 81 on the 3rd...hit 22 later that month in the wake of a significant snowfall.

1976...record high of 82 on the 4th...hit 29 later that month.

1955...record high of 80 on the 5th...hit 17 later that month.

1956...record high of 82 on the 6th...hit 24 later that month. Last freeze of the season came very late on April 21st.

2000...record highs of 82 on the 7th and 81 on the 8th...the last freeze of that season wasn't until April 9th.

2009...record highs of 82 on the 9th and 81 on the 10th.. the last freeze of that season April 8th.

2006...record high of 81 on the 11th...hit 28 on back-to-back days later that month.

80ºF/55ºF high/low here today, started off foggy again and turned to sun. Today's 80ºF tied February 19 for warmest temp of the year thus far, which will soon be surpassed (perhaps tomorrow). February 19/20 had warmer lows and overall mean temps, though

We desperately need the rain!
Maybe one day, abundant moisture will meet with cold air!??IMG_4878.png

unless something dramatic happens the streak of no 80s will end today at 150 days, what a run
We will also set a new record high at RDU in the process. Today's record high is 82 degrees and the NWS in Raleigh is forecasting temperatures in the lower eighties.

High/low of 84ºF/56ºF here, warmest day thus far this year by high and mean temp. Could have been even warmer, it was 84ºF at 2pm, but a pop-up thunderstorm rolled in and knocked temps back into the mid 70sºF, which is impressively warm for rain in March. Weather that I hate in summer, but in March this is a nice novelty.

Took this on the freeway in Doraville, cumuliform clouds building as if it were August with bradford pear blossoms. Not a common sight together.

The eighty degree plus readings the past three days make it feel like we went from February straight into May. There will be chances for record
breaking highs for the next five days at KRDU. Unless the advertised cool down after the 15th hangs around for a few days, March will end up being a well above normal month. If we don't get any precipitation with this warm weather, the moderate drought in place will get worse.
