Pattern June’s Drought Dialogues

Headed for our yearly trip to Kill Devil Hills this coming weekend. This will be my 8th consecutive year and it looks to be by far the hottest one yet. It snowed a foot there this past winter now it will be 95 degrees with 100% humidity when I get there. The Jimmy curse is alive and well

Maybe there will be some snow piles left

This is equivalent to them telling you to drip your faucets with temps in the low 20’s for 3-4 consecutive nights. Miss me

1. RDU: high was 100, which was halfway between the 12Z GFS’ 102 and the 12Z Euro’s 98. So, it was a tie.

2. GSO: high was 95. 12Z GFS/Euro had 101/97. So, Euro was much better.

3. FAY: high was 98. 12Z GFS/Euro had 100/98. Euro did better and was perfect.

Water temp can turn on a dime out there. It’s 77 right now but a day of steady offshore wind can upwell into the upper 60s temporarily. May not be quite as hot as advertised.

Max today was 94. No real seabreeze coming inland which was interesting. Honestly wasn’t too bad of a day. Cumulus came up after lunch and shaded us every now and then.

This GFS precipitation map is optimistic that North and South Carolina will receive precipitation during the next couple of days. I think it is overdone but it would be nice if some of the storms that might pop up tomorrow expanded more in coverage than expected without the large hail and damaging winds.

6Z GFS/Euro for RDU highs today: still a significant difference: 103/99

GSO: 101/100

FAY: 99/99

ATL: 102/98 big diff there, too!

I just scanned thru some 11am observations from Maine to South Carolina. It's insane. 97 (104 HX) in SW Maine, 100 near NYC ALREADY with a 109 HX. 120 HX in Eastern VA popped up (84 TD).

BUT NC takes the cake at 11am..
124° HX with 95 (84 TD) IN NE NC.

And today is mayoral voting day in NYC. I wonder if turnout will be low due to the heat!

RDU up to 97F on five minute obs. Still running +4 from same time yesterday.

RDU warmed 7F from this time yesterday (93F => 100F).
If RDU continues to run four degrees above yesterday's temperature it will reach a high of 103 today. The temperature at 11:20 AM is only two degrees shy of the record high of 99 for this date. I think it is safe to say that RDU will set a record high temperature for this date.
