Pattern January Joke

My sis asked me if it would be safe to travel from Athens to ATL today. I figured yes if before sunset. Anyone know? @tractor girl @Wild Weather Monger
I would say yes, even if after sunset. The wind and sun combo has melted and evaporated all the surfaces in my neighborhood streets and on HWY 29 in Lawrenceville. I feel confident in saying the whole area by this point unless you are in far NE Georgia, is safe to travel.

16/4 wind chill is 9. Airport is 19/7 with a wind chill of 9 degrees. NWS is saying 15 for the low and TWC is saying 14. I feel like TWC is gonna be more right. Wouldn’t be surprised if we got closer to 10 in the morning if we can get these winds to ease up a little more. Then again, maybe it doesn’t matter that much, I wasn’t expecting us to be in the teens before midnight.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have the temperature anomaly map for January to date. I’m interested to see if we end up below average again

Just the raw data from NOAA. With 4 days left in the month and probably looking at -8 to -10 anomalies each day I'm guessing we'll wind up around 2F below average for the month. Every month since August has been below climo average for us.

August: -3.6F
September: -0.7F
October: -2.6F
November: -0.1F
December: -3.6F
January: -1.0 to date

Us going into the ice box for 90%+ of January of last year was actually pretty well forecasted in the long range.

I think the way I look at it is that what kinda started in the middle of this year was always going to come to an end at some point naturally pattern wise. Well, it may still be going on to an extent with the ridge focusing on the central US instead of the east, but it doesn’t seem like it’ll be beneficial unless you have a cold shot snuck in at some point with the right timing due to the Pacific blasting all the cold air off the continent below Canada.

Well, this January was one heck of a ride. Started off being very warm for 10 days, then there were 3 straight weekend winter storm chances. I’m going to be honest, I’m pooped and really do need a week off from this, but I’m hoping I feel good enough to at least spend some time in the yard in the morning tomorrow after breakfast.

Looks like we’ll finish below average by about 3 degrees for the month, but if you could remove the first 10 days of the month, I bet the average woulda been like 52 degrees or something.

January letter grade. Solid “F”. Actually that’s being generous. Really it should be expelled.

* snow to the south (and Florida. Again.)
* ice storm that had me filled with anxiety and then didn’t do much of anything at all (though I’m fine with that part)
* this garbage storm giving me nothing but a dusting (and barely even that)

3 garbage storms. The ice storm making me for the first time in my life (many decades) wishing away a winter storm. And this stupid storm today just really making me hate winter to the point that I’m just wanting it to end.

The only good thing I have to say about it is the last minute move to right the epic wrong done to Raleigh today. Really glad to see @SD finally seeing the snow he’s deserved. Even if late and not during the day. And prolly not as much.

I’d end with my true feelings about this January, but it’d be a bunch censored dashes. Complete garbage!
